These are a set of guidelines built by the Brazilian Association of Medical Education (ABEM) and the Brazilian Society of Family and Community Medicine (SBMFC) with the aim of supporting medical schools in a practical and objective manner, when elaborating pedagogical-political projects on Primary Health Care (PHC). The advent of the Brazilian National Curricular Guidelines for Medical Education, which are approved by the Ministry of Education in 2001 have since improved the teaching of undergraduate medical students on PHC, but there are still wide variations in implementation and quality of it in medical curricula. These guidelines by ABEM/SBMFC partnership can exert considerable influence on medical curricula by establishing minimum requirements and core competencies for PHC in Brazil.

Ambulatório de genética médica na Apae: experiência no ensino médico de graduação

Débora Gusmão Melo; Marcelo Marcos Piva Demarzo; Jair Huber

This paper relates an educational experience, whose goal was to offer community-integrated qualification in the field of medical genetics to students of the Barao de Maua Medical School, Ribeirao Preto, State of Sao Paulo, Brazil. For this purpose, a medical genetics clinic was established in 2005 at the Associacao de Pais e Amigos dos Excepcionais - Apae (Association of Parents and Friends of Handicapped Children) as part of the course of Collective Health and Family and Community Medicine. Since then, the sixth year medical students have evaluated 140 patients, establishing their degree of intellectual disability, the etiology of the mental deficiency, and offered genetic counseling to the families under the guidance of their teachers. The diversification of the learning-teaching scenario brought the students closer to the patients and to the reality of the community. Moreover, the students could assimilate some theoretical bases of medical genetics by experiencing its implications in the clinical practice, turning the learning experience significant. The authors hope that this experience will contribute to qualify doctors better prepared in medical genetics and collective health and ready for working in an integrated and integrative manner with the community.

ABstrAct The perception of the dependence symptoms is a key factor on the treatment seeking process by people who suffer from it, and its understanding is a relevant health issue. Objectives: The aim of the present study is to identify and understand the subjective meanings of the perceived dependence symptoms among patients who have sought treatment. Methods: Qualitative study conducted on an intentional sample of 13 substance dependents seeking formal treatment; in-depth semi-structured interviews. Results: The diagnostic criteria on substance dependence were spontaneously reported by the participants. They show a clear understanding of the process of treatment, compulsion and lack in controlling substance-taking behavior; withdrawal state; tolerance; neglect of alternative pleasures or interests; perception of harmful consequences due to substance abuse. Conclusions: The interviewees have a proper understanding on the seeking treatment process and seem to evaluate subjectively and carefully the distress related to the dependence symptoms. These results need special attention of health professionals, especially in primary care settings and, once approached, it may collaborate with treatment searching.
