Psychology and nutrition: predicting behavioral intention to follow weight reduction diets among low-income obese patients. The present study was accomplished with 189 low income obese attended by public health nutritionists of Joao Pessoa, Paraiba. We found out positive and negative beliefs plus the most expressive referees on these patients about the behavior of following a medical diet to reduce weight. This permitted to build a behavioral intention measurement instrument to check those who might really follow these diets. It was verified the emphasis on general normative and attitudinal aspects over obese who had up to one minimum-wage income. This may indicate two efficacious points to be explored on targeted communications to this social class during weight loss public health campaigns. This measurement can be turned into preventive health actions; obesity is considered worldwide as epidemics, in need of immediate control, growing in incidence mainly among lower ranks of the population of developing countries.

Obesity has become an epidemic that requires immediate control, mainly among the poor, particularly women and the less educated. The WHO requests and several studies confirm that support is needed for research projects examining psychological and social behavior that hampers compliance with weight loss diets. This paper uses the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) of M. Fishbein (1975) in social psychology, comparing two series of open interviews (conducted in 2001 and 2005) that disclosed positive (advantageous) and negative (harmful) beliefs about weight loss diets among low-income obese patients in João Pessoa, Paraíba State, as well as their guides (people of influential opinion) on following their diets. The 2001 findings were corroborated in 2005, revealing fears of diseases related to obesity and the wish to feel healthier and lighter. Mothers, children and above all spouses were mentioned as diet supporters. It was stressed that will-power is not be enough, but also reflection and building up control skills, in addition to allocating and altering life styles. Concerns related to appearance were not high priority. This information may lead to better diet compliance.

Based on the Theory of Reasoned Action (TRA) as a good resource to explain and predict a series of health-linked behaviors, it tried to investigate the peoples intention, including people that had already suffered from a heart attack, in they practice walking, at least three times a week. For this, it was built, applied and validated an instrument composed of 22 items, in an amount of 302 people of the population in general to verify the intention of they exercise such behavior. The results demonstrated that the TRA Model is able to predict the quoted behavior. A Multiple Regression analyses explained 42% of the variance obtained from behavior intention, through general normative beliefs, attitude and general behavior beliefs, as decisive for the behavior of walking, at least three times a week. The variables of normative nature were the responsible for most of the explained variance, presenting, thus, its importance for interventions, seeking the adoption of the investigated behavior.

University students’ attitudes towards pornographic material consumption. The expansion of the pornographic material market raises the question of the influence of the values transmitted by the media in people’s behavior. Despite the apparent interest in sexuality by the society in general, Brazil lacks studies on this topic, which has not yet been deeply discussed. This study describes the elaboration and validation of a psychometric instrument for the measuring of attitudes towards the consumption of pornographic material, answered by 336 university students and submitted to a factor analysis. 33 items were built in order to cover two dimensions, presenting adequate reliability scores: (1) “Positive effects of pornography”, expressing the idea that pornographic material is favorable to sexual life ( = 0.94) and (2) “Harmful effects of pornography”, which expresses the idea that this same material is noxious to intimate relationships and it is associated to vice and isolation ( = 0.85).

The necessity of assessing the womens roles quality, such as paid worker and mother roles, led to the construction of scales that could measure them. Considering the lack of adequate measures to assess these roles, the present research aimed to investigate the psychometric properties in Brazilian samples of role quality scales developed in the USA by Baruch and Barnett (1986). The data consisted of 519 employed mothers who answered items about rewards and concerns relating to each role. A factor analysis using principal axis factoring was used to identify factors that could be used in further analyses. The results show reliable psychometric parameters in the assessment of role quality.
