SUMMARYA classification of the Loculoascomycetes is presented in the form of dichotomous keys to 58 families in eight orders. The families Chaeto-thyriaceae, Fenestellaceae, Parmulariaceae, Phaeosp...

the presence of light. Although this study has indicated that the production of basidia is not necessarily light dependent, normal cap expansion does require light as previously reported (Bobbitt and Crang, 1974). Further investigations into the environmental and biochemical aspects of niduli and of hymenial differentiation are needed in order to further elucidate the control mechanisms of sporulation. This study was supported in part by an equipment grant from the Kresge Foundation.

The history and diagnostic characteristics of the Calosphaeriales, family Calosphaeriaceae (Class Ascomycetes) are reviewed. A combination of features of ascomata and asci permits recognition of eight genera: Calosphaeria, Scoptria, Enchnoa, Jattaea, Romellia, Graphostroma, Togninia, and Pleurostoma. Some ofthe species are described and illustrated. One new species, Romellia tympanoides, is described; the new combinations Scoptria discreta, Jattaea curvicolla, J. ceanothina, Romellia cornina, and Pleurostoma ootheca are proposed.

SUMMARY The European Buergenerula biseptata (E. Rostrup) H. Sydow has as a North American synonym Yukonia caricis Sprague, the type species of Yukonia. The taxonomic position of Buergenerula is with members of the Physosporellaceae in the Phyllachorales. The Phyllachorales is divided into the Phacidiaceae, Porinaceae, Melogrammataceae (Phyllachoraceae), and Physosporellaceae. In the Physosporellaceae the genera Apiospora, Apiothyrium, Arwidssonia, Buergenerula, Exarmidium, Hyponectria, Monographella, Oxydothis, Physalospora, and Pseudomassaria are distinguished by perithecial configuration and shape and septation of asco

SUMMARY A new species, Pseudomassaria carolinensis Barr & Hodges, found in circular necrotic spots formed around perithecia of Phyllachora persea Hodges on living leaves of Persea borbonia (L.) Spreng. in South Carolina, is described. Its associated conidial state is Beltraniella portoricensis (F. L. Stevens) Pirozynski & Patil. This is the first report of a conidial state for any species of Pseudomassaria.

The concept of Serenomyces is revised and expanded. A key to the species now known, all on Palmae, is presented. A new species, S. californica, that develops on rachises of California fan palm is recognized. The genus is more aptly placed in the Phyllachorales than in the Ceratostomataceae because of the habit of the subepidermal ascomata in stromatic tissues and the centrum of thin-walled asci among delicate paraphyses.

Trabutia possesses unitunicate asci and must be removed from the Loculoascomycetes. The characteristics ofbiotrophic habit, centrum of thin-walled asci at maturity among paraphyses, and pycnidial anamorph dictate its disposition in the Phyllachoraceae of the Phyllachorales.

Xenomeris saccifolii is described from leaves ofSaccifolium bandeirae (Gentianales, Saccifoliaceae);Gibbera sphyrospermi is described from fruit ofSphyrospermum cordifolium (Ericales, Ericaceae). The anamorph ofG. sphyrospermi is presumed to be a species ofStigmina. The concept ofStigmina is expanded to include species with unicellular conidia produced on branched conidiophores.
