The objective of this study is to determining the effects of swimming on the functional capacity of patients with spinal cord injury. METHODS: 16 patients with spinal cord injury were divided into two groups: experimental and control. The assessment of both groups was performed using the Functional Independence Measure (FIM scale) before and after the trial, which consisted of swimming sessions performed twice a week during a period of four months. RESULTS: Both groups demonstrated noticeable gains related to body care, transference, overall and motor scores, even though the experimental group presented greater gains in transference, overall motor score and overall score. CONCLUSION: The swimming activity was effective in improving their physical condition, bringing motor benefits on the functional capacity of participants from the experimental group.

The article suggests sociodrama as a sociatric method for the actions of the psychologists when facing polemic issues, among them, the quota policy for African-Brazilians in universities. The article starts with a thought about scientific-cultural productions that assist social scientists for the social transformation. Assuming social changes through cultural and psychotherapeutic methods are based on the catharses phenomenon, the text analyses the evolution of this concept: rituals, Greek theatre, Psychoanalysis and sociodrama, which creates the idea of integration catharses. Example is given by a sociodrama of the quota system for African-descendants in the University of Brasilia, undertaken by Psychology undergraduates. The event led to a collective creation that favoured a social inclusion process and revealed the political role of the psychologist in society.

The study analyzed Brazilian articles on research in basic health units, which used educative activities as methodology, in order to ascertain the main characteristics of those activities being conducted in primary health care services. The following units were accessed: Lilacs, Scielo and Adolec. The articles were categorized according to these criteria: (1) articles published in Brazilian journals about (2) group interventions with adolescents for health promotion (3) in basic health units, (4) between 2000-2010. The texts were analyzed according to the following items: professionals involved, methodological features, topics covered in the groups, frequency, number of participants, age, sex, the conception of adolescence present in the studies as well as results presented by the authors. The results showed a larger number of actions based on epidemiological and biomedical research. The services described in these publications for focused on group interventions the prevention of risk behavior in sexual and reproductive health rather than considering the diversity of factors related to the adolescents’ overall health concerns.

Drugs users have been receiving contradictory treatments thereby promoting their stigma besides hiding and limiting the understanding of the phenomenon. The objective of this study was to investigate how the District Attorneys and Judges are considering and applying the new law which legislates on the conduct of drug use in Brazil. Eleven Law professionals from the Federal District participated in semi-structured interviews divided in three areas: the point of view in relation to the user of drugs, how the law is being applied, and how they conceive the work of the multidisciplinary teams. The results showed very heterogeneous positions, showing that there is no unanimity on the understanding of the new law. For some, there is a shared belief that drugs abuse is a public health problem, for others, it is believed that the user must receive a punishment for his/her illegal act. An effective and efficient interdisciplinary dialogue should allow a reflective action aiming at favoring those who come to justice.

The study aims to understand the role of women that denounce sexual violence perpetrated by a community or kinship member against their son or daughter. The work presents results of semi structured interviews conducted with five mothers of children who were victims of intrafamiliar sexual violence. We used the content analysis of Bardin, which divides the results into four categories: fear, guilt, anger, doubt: first reactions to the disclosure; pain of truth becomes strength to act; instances of protection and guarantee of rights and expectations of support and resolution; and changes and going ahead. The motivations for protection arose from the strengthened maternal-filial bond, and recognition of the maternal duty to protect and care for their children. We emphasize the crucial role of institutions on the protection and guarantee of rights, and concluded that adversity and suffering led to changes in the way mothers face and understand life experiences.

The project of reducing the full legal age in Brazil is in an advanced process in the National Congress. This is a study of the social representations of Brazilian legislators responsible for the decisions on legal age in the country. This documentary research aims to analyze the consistency of psychosocial and legal arguments for and against the reduction of the full legal age found in the documents that are processed at the Legislative Chamber of Deputies and Senate. Data were processed and analyzed using the software ALCESTE, and the results showed that the social representations of parliamentaries that are in favor of reducing the full legal age are consistent with those of the former Code for Minors and that Brazilian adolescents are at serious risk of losing their historically acquired rights.

The objective was to analyze the scientific tendencies pointed by the national publications about Vocational Guidance from 2006 to 2010. A manual and boolean search was performed within the bases BVS-Psi and INDEX-Psi returning 108 articles, which were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. It was verified how much the production in vocational guidance has met the research agendas set by previous reviews and if the nomenclature used to refer to vocational guidance became more concise and homogeneous. From the results, it is pointed that 1) the number of articles in the field has doubled compared to the previous 5-year period; 2) there is more interaction among researchers; 3) there were more studies on other populations as retired people and low income groups; 4) there are more works about psychological tests. The results indicate that the agendas were partially met and there was increase in the confusion about the used nomenclature.
