The sports environment can enhance social and cultural pressure towards a lean body. The close relationship between corporal image and performance makes the female athletes a group particularly vulnerable to eating disorders and weight-control practices. The aim of the present work is to evaluate the presence of behaviors suggestive of eating disorders, shifts in body perception, and menstrual dysfunctions in female athletes of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro School of Physical Education (EEFD-UFRJ). Twelve female athletes (20 ± 2 years), who had been training for 4.6 ± 2.3 years, a total of 13.8 ± 2.9 hours per week, were examined. The results of the athletes and of 32 young non-athletes (15 ± 1.4 years) were compared. The Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26) was used to evaluate weight-control and eating attitudes and behaviors. The Bulimic Investigatory Test Edimburgh (BITE) was used to identify suggestive behaviors of bulimia nervosa, and also to obtain data about cognitive and behavioral aspects of this disorder. The Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) was used to verify dissatisfaction with body image. The three self-applied questionnaires were used in their Portuguese versions. The athletes presented body mass of 59 ± 7.3 kg, height of 1.65 ± 0.03 m, percentage of body fat (%F) of 23.1 ± 4.1% and body mass index (BMI) of 21.6 ± 2.3 kg/m2. The entire sample had a %F compatible for age and sex, although 33% of the athletes presented some body image dissatisfaction. The BITE evidenced that 16.6% of the athletes presented a non-usual dietary pattern according to symptoms, but with no significance in terms of severity. These athletes are included among those who are not happy with their body. No athlete had a positive EAT-26 results. The findings of this study suggest the presence of symptoms that do not actually characterize bulimia or anorexia nervosa, but they point to the need of a careful surveillance and assessment of eating disorders and their precursors among athletes, as a way of prevention.

This essay analyzes some of the by-products of the process of globalization, such as the massification and the importation of hegemonic cultural models, which strip man of the feeling of belonging to human groups and invade his symbolic universe. This condition expropriates the cultural point of reference that forms the basis and structures the human psyche, causing generalized distress. This fracture dislocates the human identity and sustains some modern and emerging diseases, such as feeding behavior disorders. This problem is expressed in the area of Public Health as a silent and symbolic epidemic at the turn of the millennium.

Abstract: The psychologist in the public health sector deals with the challenge of fitting in non-psychiatric institutions characterized as one specific locus of professional practice of health. This study intends to understand the meanings attributed by the psychologists to their practice developed in the public health institutions in Fortaleza. Based on qualitative approach from a critical-interpretative perspective, the sample was composed by eight psychologists who are part of the public health team. The main technique employed was the non-directive individual interview that allowed to construct two different axis related to the objectives. The results point out many difficulties experienced by the informants that vary from a precarious academic graduation until the influence of the biomedical model in the assistance organization. OBJECTIVE: To characterize risky eating habits and factors related to eating disorders among nutrition students in the city of Rio de Janeiro METHODS: Sectional study with a segment of the population pointed out in literature as being at risk of developing eating disorders. The Bulimic Investigatory Test Edinburgh (BITE) questionnaire, the Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26) questionnaire and a variable which considers the two related tools (Nunes et al, 2001) were used. RESULTS: One hundred ninety-three female students were studied, being 20.9 years old on the average ± 2 years. A positive result of 14% (IC 95%: 9.4%-20%) in the EAT-26 was observed. In the BITE advanced symptoms and scores in the serious range were found in 5.7% (IC 95%: 2.9%-10%) and 3.2% (IC 95%: 1.2%-6.9%), respectively. When positive EAT-26 results were combined with serious range BITE scores and advanced symptoms, positive correlations were found in 64.7% (p < 0.001) and 36.4% (p < 0.001), respectively. Of the women who showed positive EAT-26, 88.5% were within the normal range of the body mass index (BMI) (p < 0.031). CONCLUSIONS: One must pay close attention to the tendencies towards eating disorders in the group, since these disorders will be a focus of their professional practice, which could compromise their work in the cases where nutritionists already present syndromes or tendencies towards disorders.

This study has the purpose of analyzing the praxis of a specific professional segment of social workers of the health care area, that is, the social nutritionists, presenting a theoretical framework concerning the relationship between health and work. Through an investigative case study, guided by the qualitative methodology of social research, a wide range of aspects related to the subjectivity of the group is analyzed. These aspects are concerned with the routine of their work in the sector and, more particularly, with the distress and suffering present there. The results indicate a prevalence of psychoaffective and mental distress over the physical distress, at the same time that points out some determining factors of this identified context. On the other hand, a high level of work satisfaction is found. This aspect, in itself, shades down the suffering experienced by the studied group in their professional praxis.
