Instruídas e trabalhadeiras Trabalho feminino no final do século XX

Cristina Bruschini; Maria Rosa Lombardi

Based on official data provided by the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), by the Ministry of Labor and Employment, and by the Ministry of Education and Culture, this text shows the consolidation of womens access to the labor market during the 90s. It also shows that their presence remained unchanged, both in the formal and in the informal market in spite of the economic crisis of that decade. Emphasizing the schooling level, the article reveals that after elementary school, girls tend to conclude technical and professional courses, as well as achieve high school degrees, in a higher number than boys. Young women account for 60% of college students. However, young girls concentrate their preference in some areas of knowledge such as Humanities, Social Sciences, Arts, Biological Sciences and Health. Therefore, they end up as skilled professionals in the so-called ghettos of female laborforce.

Maria Rosa Lombardi

This article discusses the challenges of feminization in a specific sector: housing construction. Recent research has brought evidence of the imbrication between work and bullying and gender harassment practices in the construction of the professional identity of construction engineers. Undergoing peculiar organization and working conditions, since early, engineers face the rude and disrespectful treatment received from colleagues and bosses as an integral part of their practical training. In general, these standards of conduct are accepted as normal, not as bullying. For women engineers, there is also gender harassment, which is characterized by explicit situations of discrimination and violence, which tend to negatively influence their greater inclusion in construction sites. This article discusses the challenges of feminization in a specific sector: housing construction. Profissão: oficial engenheira naval da Marinha de Guerra do Brasil

Maria Rosa Lombardi

This article discusses some results of an exploratory study carried out with women official naval engineers of the Brazilian Navy. The results permitted an initial understanding of the female position in the Official Naval Engineers Corp. So, it was possible to afford a glimpse to a complex reality, in which gender relations and work relations present their own features, keeping, at the same time, standards of insertion and integration similar to those the non-military women engineers passed. The article begins indicating some aspects of the process of integration of women in the Brazilian Navy. Next, it is analyzed, from the point of view of the subjects, how they perceive their post, their image as women belonging to the body of official naval engineers, the work that they do as well as the gender relations in the military environment. The text finishes raising questions for future investigations.
