This paper critically analyses diversity management in organizations as an inherent part of technocratic ideology, which aims to displace the treatment of social inequality from the political instance to the human resources management of companies. From the analysis of the international and national literature on the subject it is discovered that diversity management has emerged as a response of North American managers to the affirmative action policies of the 1960´s and 1970´s. This literature advocates that diversity management is more effective to deal with social inequalities because it is based on meritocracy and makes achievable to reach economic benefits both to individuals and companies. The transplantation of these practices into the Brazilian context, on the other hand, bumps into a complication in terms of their adoption face to the myth of the Brazilian racial democracy, which masks prejudice and gets in tension with the ideology of diversity management.

This paper’s objective is to question whether management and organization knowledge (MOK) is able to speak a language other than English and discuss how the hegemony of this language in the scientific field has contributed to the reproduction of the same colonial logic that for centuries prevented native peoples from making sense of what they thought, spoke and wrote. We show that the main instrument of power that guarantees this hegemony is control over the criteria used for the publication and circulation of MOK, which tends to marginalize everything that is produced outside the linguistic basis controlled by the North. The main effect of this logic is that native researchers to submit to control by the North; they find themselves in a subaltern position, condemned in their own country to operate under an external logic that defines what is and what is not quality scientific knowledge in the management and organizational field.

The purpose of this study is to understand the impact of the new Brazilian legislation regulating partnerships between the State and Civil Society (Nonprofit) Organizations between 1999 and 2002. The passing of Law No. 9790/99 - known as the Nonprofit Law - created the legal concept of Organizacoes da Sociedade Civil de Interesse Publico - OSCIPs (Public Interest Civil Society Organizations). Based on an exploratory survey, this study, using the Institutional Theory, allowed the analysis of how older organizations (NGOs and traditional social benefit organizations) resisted to the adoption of the OSCIP standard due to organizational inertia, while acceptance of the model was greater among younger organizations, in a clear coercive and normative isomorphic development.

This paper analyses the design of organisational storytelling by the media. Media play essential roles in the process of widespread organisation stories, as well as in the creation and re-creation of them. We specifically propose to identify the elements in media narratives that make storytelling appealing to the public and facilitate the process of the sensemaking of an organisation and its leader. For this purpose, we study the case of media discourse during the episode of the death of Steve Jobs, the leader of one of the most economically valuable companies in the world – Apple. We reach the conclusion that media narrative in this episode seemed pasteurised to preserve a discourse of rational coherence. As ‘germs’ in discourse are eliminated, ambiguous and accidental aspects are neglected, or they gain a deterministic meaning in the plot.

ABSTRACT The operational environment of civil society organisations (CSOs) in Brazil has undergone several changes since the 1990s that deepened in the last decade, especially for a group of organisations that are the focus of this study: CSOs working for the promotion and defence of rights (AHRCSOs – advocacy and human rights CSOs). This article examines these recent changes, detailing the main limitations and conditions imposed on AHRCSOs by analysing their organisational and cultural characteristics. The organisational field of AHRCSOs is fluid and dispersed, and several organisations perform different activities. The article traces the history of these organisations and the foundations that led them to build their shared identity project. It then discusses AHRCSOs’ organisational features and culture, in relation to the changes faced by the field and the challenges to be met. The closing remarks point to the need for changes in the culture and operations of these organisations in order to guarantee their sustainability of funding, as well as their capacity for social dialogue and intervention.

This study describes the concept of corporate reputation and reviews some of the major points that exist when it comes to measuring it. It thus suggests a new index for measurement and its advantages and disadvantages are pointed out. The consistency of the seven key variables for the collecting indicator is described by the results of a factor analysis and correlations. Finally, the indicator is put to test by gathering the perception of corporate reputation of 1500 individuals for 69 companies belonging to 15 different industrial sectors, in Peru. The results indicate that the proposed index variables are not necessarily of greatest interest to the study sample in which companies have a better performance. Also greater memorial companies aren’t necessarily those that enjoy a greater corporate reputation. Managerial implications for the organizations in the process of managing and monitoring the dimensions involved of this key asset are also referenced.Contextualization of corporate social responsibility in Latin America and its future perspectives
