Finite element analysis of transient electromagnetic‐thermal phenomena in a squirrel cage motor

Mariusz Barański; Andrzej Demenko; Wieslaw Lyskawinski; Wojciech Szelag

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to elaborate the method and algorithm for the analysis of electromagnetic and thermal transients in a squirrel cage induction motor.Design/methodology/approach – The paper presents the special software for transient finite element (FE) analysis of coupled electromagnetic‐thermal problems in a squirrel cage induction motor. The software has been prepared and is successfully applied in the design of special squirrel cage motors, e.g. the motors working in cryogenic conditions. A time‐stepping FE method and transients analysis of an induction motor has been applied. The nonlinearity of the magnetic circuit, the movement of the rotor and the skewed slots have been taken into account. The results of computations have been compared with measurements.Findings – The method presented and the elaborated specialised software for FE analysis of electromagnetic and thermal transients are used to determine the dynamic performance of the squirrel‐cage induction motor. The results o...

Purpose – The paper aims to elaborate the method and algorithm of analysis of induction motor working in cryogenic temperature.Design/methodology/approach – This paper presents the design and investigation of performance characteristics of three‐phase high voltage squirrel‐cage submerged motor. The motor is intended to work at cryogenic temperature −161°C in liquefied natural gas (LNG). The time‐stepping finite element method of transients analysis in induction motor working in cryogenic temperature has been presented. The nonlinearity of the magnetic circuit, the movement of the rotor and skewed slots have been taken into account.Findings – The study finds that presented method and elaborated software are used to determine the steady state and dynamic performance of the high voltage squirrel‐cage submerged motor. The results of simulations and measurements of constructed model motor have been presented.Research limitations/implications – The problem has been considered as the 2D one. In order to take int...

Mariusz Barański; Paweł Idziak; Wiesław Łyskawiński; Wojciech Szeląg

The paper presents the special algorithm and software for the transient FE analysis of electromagnetic phenomena in a squirrel cage induction motor and in a line start permanent magnet synchronous motor. The presented algorithm and the elaborated specialized software for the finite element analysis of transients and steady states are used to determine the power parameters of the squirrel-cage induction motor as well as the Line Start Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (LSPMSM). The nonlinearity of the magnetic circuit, the movement of the rotor and the skewed slots have been taken into account. The results of computations have been compared with measurements. The conclusions from the comparison of calculation results with the results of measurements were presented. (Analiza parametrów energetycznych silnika indukcyjnego klatkowego i silnika synchronicznego z magnesami w kształcie litery U o rozruchu bezpośrednim). Zaprezentowano wybrane rezultaty badań symulacyjnych i laboratoryjnych. Przedstawiono wnioski wynikające z porównania wyników obliczeń z rezultatami pomiarów.

Influence of temperature on partial demagnetization of the permanent magnets during starting process of line start permanent magnet synchronous motor

Mariusz Barański; Wojciech Szelag; Cezary Jedryczka

The paper presents a 2D field-circuit model of coupled electromagnetic thermal and mechanical phenomena in a line start permanent magnet synchronous motor (LSPMSM). The nonlinearity of the magnetic circuit, the influence of temperature on magnetic properties of the permanent magnets as well as on electric and thermal properties of the materials have been taken into account. The elaborated on the basis of this model algorithm as well as a developed computer program have been used to analyze the influence of temperature and armature reaction on the magnet stabilization during the starting process of the considered motor. The selected results of simulations have been presented and discussed.

Electrothermal analysis of start-up process in the squirrel cage induction motor using FEM

Mariusz Barański

The paper presents a special algorithm and software for the analysis of coupled electromagnetic-thermal phenomena in a squirrel cage induction motor. In the proposed model the nonlinearity of the magnetic circuit, the movement of the rotor, the skewed slots and the influence of temperature on electrical and thermal properties of the materials have been taken into account. In order to verify the developed algorithm and software, the startup process of the motor has been examined, among others. The results of computations have been compared to the measurements.
