Calcifying cystic odontogenic tumors (CCOTs) are benign cystic lesions of odontogenic origin characterized by an ameloblastoma-like epithelium and the presence of a group of cells named ghost cells. The pattern of cytokeratin (Ck) expression on these lesions remains unclear and needs to be clarified. To this end, the expression of Ck6, Ck13, Ck14, Ck18, and Ck19 in the epithelium lining of 7 cases of CCOTs was evaluated by immunohistochemistry. For this, the epithelium lining was divided into 3 distinct regions: basal layer, suprabasal layer, and the compartment composed of ghost cells. In this study, 6 cases (85.7%) were classified as type 1 and 1 (14.3%) as type 4. All cases were negative for Ck13 and Ck18, despite the epithelial layer, as well as in the ghost cells. Ck6 was only positive in the ghost cells. Positivity for Ck14 and Ck19 was found in the basal and suprabasal layers, including the ghost cells. The results showing positivity for Ck14 and Ck19 in all of the analyzed cases reinforce CCOT as being of odontogenic origin, and the restricted expression of Ck6 in the ghost cells may be indicative that these cells suffer an altered differentiation into hair follicles in CCOTs.

Objective: To evaluate the indicators of quality of life (QoL) of children and adolescents with cancer and to evaluate the QoL of participants regarding oral health. Material and Methods: The modified Autoquestionnaire Qualite de Vie Enfant Image (AUQEI), with scores ranging from 0 to 78 and a cut-off value of 48, was the instrument used in this study. Questions were added regarding oral health, with scores ranging from 0 to 18. The study consisted of two groups: group 1 (case) consisted of 24 children and adolescents with cancer, and group 2 (control) consisted of 30 healthy children and adolescents aged 6 to 15 years old. A chi-square test was performed using the SPSS program, version 18.0, to determine whether health conditions were related to QoL. Results: We observed that 69.25% of participants had scores representing a satisfactory QoL, with a mean score of 54.3 (51.7 for the group of children and adolescents with cancer and 56.5 for the healthy group). The results of the present study showed a value of p =0.016, suggesting that the disease condition is related to lower QoL scores. The Mann-Whitney test showed that the healthy group showed significantly better indicators in the oral health domain. Conclusion: The children and adolescents under study showed satisfactory overall QoL standards; however, when comparing the cancer group to the healthy group, we observed that cancer is associated with lower QoL indicators.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the behavior of dental students regarding cross infection control, verify that students who are more advanced in the course had better biosecurity conduct. The topics covered included: stages of sterilization processes (disinfection pre-washing, washing and sterilization), surface disinfection and use of mechanical barrier. For this 117 students enrolled in clinical discipline were randomly selected and invited to answer a questionnaire with 19 objective questions. The responses were analyzed descriptively and the χ2 test. It was found that 94.0% of students do not perform disinfection prewash, 86.2% always do the washing of instruments prior to sterilization and 2.5% use hand protection appropriate for this purpose. Disinfection of surfaces is performed by 52% of the students and the mechanical barrier is commonly used by 73% of them. Statistical analysis identified that students in eighth and ninth periods have better behavior in to organization of the instrumental for sterilization and to disinfection of surfaces. It was found that students in the later periods show better behavior. There is no a pattern in behavior regarding the prevention of cross infection to the basic steps of biosafety academic center evaluated.

Objective: To evaluate the expression through immunohistochemistry of galectins -1, -3 and -7 in cases of lip squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in association with clinical data and morphological parameters proposed by Bryne (1998). Material and Methods: Thirty paraffin-embedded SCC cases were submitted to histological sections. Two independent pathologists performed the analysis of galectins -1, -3 and -7 through light microscopy evaluating the presence or absence of marking and intensity. The expressions of these proteins were submitted to statistical analysis (chi-square test, Fishers exact test and Binomial test for the comparison of proportions). Results: Positive expression of galectins -1 and -3 was observed in 93.3% and 43.3% of cases, respectively. However, there was no statistically significant association between these proteins and the clinical variables used. Galectin-7 immuno-expression was present in all cases evaluated and showed statistical significance between marked cell type (parenchyma cells) and regional metastasis and between marked cell type (parenchyma cells) and histological gradation. Conclusion: Changes in the galectins -1, -3 and -7 expression suggest the participation of these proteins in the regulation of cellular functions and that the immuno-expression of these proteins can act as a marker of the biological behavior of lip squamous cell carcinoma.
