Advances in speech-processing technology have enabled novel ways to learn a foreign language online. With Engkoo, researchers in China are working to turn any computer into a language learning assistant and make searching a language easier. The featured Web extra at http://youtu.be/_VHDMAKKLKo is a video discussion titled “Computer-Assisted Audiovisual Language Learning” that demonstrates Engkoo, a Web-based computer-assisted audiovisual language-learning service that combines two emerging speech processing technologies-talking head and phonetic similarity search.

Towards a Specialized Search Engine for Language Learners [Point of View]

The internet serves a paradoxical role in language learning. Providing a fertile ground for neologisms and redefinitions, the web incubates a growing translation gap between ones native tongue and his or her target foreign language. However, the internet can also be used to bridge languages even as they change, because it contains a vast and ever expanding set of human-translated web pages. In this paper, we propose that search engines that mine high-quality human translations can unlock the Webs pedagogical potential, and form the basis for next-generation language learning tools. We introduce Engkoo, an English learning search engine for Chinese speakers, to demonstrate the effectiveness of this concept in practice.

Visiads: A vision-based advertising platform for camera phones

In this demonstration, we present VisiAds, a vision-based online advertising platform which allows advertisers to bid on image content as opposed to text keywords. The demonstration shows an implementation of the platform designed specifically for mobile application scenarios. It can be used by advertisers to trigger and deliver multiple advertisements based on a query image captured from a consumer-grade cellular phone with an embedded camera.
