Making Research Data Repositories Visible: The re3data.org Registry

Researchers require infrastructures that ensure a maximum of accessibility, stability and reliability to facilitate working with and sharing of research data. Such infrastructures are being increasingly summarized under the term Research Data Repositories (RDR). The project re3data.org–Registry of Research Data Repositories–has begun to index research data repositories in 2012 and offers researchers, funding organizations, libraries and publishers an overview of the heterogeneous research data repository landscape. In July 2013 re3data.org lists 400 research data repositories and counting. 288 of these are described in detail using the re3data.org vocabulary. Information icons help researchers to easily identify an adequate repository for the storage and reuse of their data. This article describes the heterogeneous RDR landscape and presents a typology of institutional, disciplinary, multidisciplinary and project-specific RDR. Further the article outlines the features of re3data.org, and shows how this registry helps to identify appropriate repositories for storage and search of research data.

As a result of the increasing connectivity provided by smartphones, wireless Internet availability, and portable devices such as laptops and tablets, technology users can and often are continuously connected to the Internet and its communication services. However, many technology users who first embraced constant connectivity are now pushing back, looking for ways to resist the constant call to be permanently connected. This pushback behavior is starting to appear in the popular press, in personal blogs, and in a small number of academic studies. “Pushback” is a growing phenomenon among frequent technology users seeking to establish boundaries, resist information overload, and establish greater personal life balance. This study examines a growing body of both academic and non-academic literature in which we identified five primary motivations and five primary behaviors related to pushback by communication technology users. Primary pushback motivations include emotional dissatisfaction, external values, taking control, addiction, and privacy. Primary pushback behaviors are behavior adaptation, social agreement, no problem, tech control, and back to the woods. The implications of these motivations and behaviors surrounding pushback to communication technology are discussed.

„Die digitale Forschungswelt“ als Gegenstand der Forschung / Research on Digital Research / Recherche dans la domaine de la recherche numérique

In diesem Beitrag wird der Lehr- und Forschungsbereich Informationsmanagement am IBI vorgestellt. Aktuelle und zukünftige Lehrgebiete werden benannt und der Bezug zu Forschungsschwerpunkten herausgestellt. Dazu gehören drittmittelgeförderte Projekte, Forschungsarbeiten sowie Projekte in der Lehre. Die Forschungsschwerpunkte werden darüber hinaus in die Entwicklung der Forschungsgebiete in der Bibliotheks- und Informationswissenschaft eingeordnet. The article presents the information management department at the Berlin School of Library and Information Science. Current and future fields of teaching are linked with the research emphasized by the department. Research includes external funds projects, research theses and project classes. Furthermore the research fields are related to general research fields of library and information science (LIS). Cet article présente la section gestion de l’information à l’IBI (« Institut für Bibliotheks- und Informationswissenschaft »), l’Institut de bibliothéconomie et des sciences de l’information. Les auteurs présentent les branches d’enseignement actuelles et futures et font également le lien avec les principaux domaines de recherche. Cela inclut des projets financés par des tiers, des travaux de recherche, ainsi que des projets dans l’enseignement. De plus, les auteurs remettent les principaux domaines de recherche dans le contexte du développement général de la recherche en bibliothéconomie et sciences de l’information.

Unveiling Research Data Stocks: A Case of Humboldt-Universitt zu Berlin

Research data as an integral part of the scholarly record is increasingly attracting attention of all stakeholder groups. Higher education institutions, funding agencies, policy makers as well as the public at large see benefits in accelerating science through opening access to research data. More specifically, this aims at better re-usability and verification of research findings. The latter is particularly of great interest for higher education and other research institutions, as they embody scholarly scrutiny and trust. Once established as an university of a new type that should unify research and teaching, HumboldtUniversitat has recently created a new job position to develop an institutional concept for research data management. In this paper we present the initial situation along with preliminary survey findings and draw the consequences for multidisciplinary higher education institutions by taking the example of Humboldt-Universitat zu Berlin (HU).

Qualitätssicherung im Umgang mit digitalen Forschungsdaten / Quality assurance of digital research data / La garantie de la qualité des données numériques de recherche

Der Beitrag behandelt das Thema Qualitätssicherung im Umgang mit digitalen Forschungsdaten. Es werden drei Ebenen herausgearbeitet, auf die sich die Qualitätssicherung beziehen kann: die der Forschungsdaten selbst, der Metadaten zur ihrer Erschließung sowie der Forschungsdaten- Infrastrukturen. Es erfolgt eine Annäherung an den Qualitätsbegriff im Kontext digitaler Forschungsdaten sowie an die qualitätssichernden Verfahren. Exemplarische nationale und internationale Initiativen werden vorgestellt, die Empfehlungen und Kriterien zu disziplinübergreifenden Aspekten der Qualitätssicherung formulieren. Zudem wird ein disziplinäres Beispiel aus der historischen Korpuslinguistik vorgestellt. The article deals with quality assurance of digital research data. Three categories of quality assurance are identified: digital research data itself, its metadata and research data infrastructures. An approach to define quality of research data and quality assurance is provided. The recommendations of national and international initiatives on interdisciplinary aspects of quality assurance are presented. Moreover a disciplinary example from historical corpus linguistics is introduced. L’auteur aborde la question de la garantie de la qualité dans le domaine des données numériques de recherche. La garantie de la qualité peut agir à trois niveaux différents: les données de la recherche elles-mêmes, leurs métadonnées ainsi que leurs infrastructures. L’auteur propose une définition de la notion de qualité dans le contexte des données de recherche numériques ainsi que des procédures d’assurance de qualité. Ensuite, il énumère des exemples d’initiatives nationales et internationales pour formuler des recommandations et des critères pour les aspects interdisciplinaires de la garantie qualité. Finalement, il présente un exemple de la linguistique de corpus historique.

Stand der Informationswissenschaft 2011

Wandelnde Rahmenbedingungen stellen die Informationswissenschaft vor vielfaltige Herausforderungen. So scheinen zwar digitale Technologien jedoch nicht deren Folgewirkungen auf die Disziplin und ihre Methoden in der Wechselbeziehung zur Gesellschaft umfassend berucksichtigt. Der Artikel dokumentiert die zahe Diskussion um den Stand und die Zukunft der Informationswissenschaft in Deutschland und formuliert Thesen zur Weiterentwicklung des Faches. Weiterhin werden Reaktionen auf diese Thesen in Clustern zusammengefasst und ein sich an diesen ausgerichteter Workshop dokumentiert.
