This paper presents a system to monitor pick-up/drop-off of school children to enhance the safety of children during the daily transportation from and to school. The system consists of two main units, a bus unit and a school unit. The bus unit the system is used to detect when a child boards or leaves the bus. This information is communicated to the school unit that identifies which of the children did not board or leave the bus and issues an alert message accordingly. The system has a developed web-based database-driven application that facilities its management and provides useful information about the children to authorized personal. A complete prototype of the proposed system was implemented and tested to validate the system functionality. The results show that the system is promising for daily transportation safety.

This paper presents a bus detection system using RFID technology that aims to ease the traveling and movement of blind people. The proposed system consists of two detection subsystems; one on the buses and the other on the bus stations, database system and a website. In the bus detection subsystem, the nearby stations will be easily detected and then announced through a voice message inside the bus. Moreover, any existing blind person in the surrounding area of the station will be detected by the bus subsystem to alert the bus driver about the number of blind persons. In the bus station subsystem, the coming buses will be detected and then announced in the station in order to alert the blind people. A complete system prototype has been constructed and tested to validate the proposed system. The results show that the system performance is promising in terms of system functionality, safety, and cost.

Hilbert Vibration Decomposition (HVD) is introduced to the voltage flicker analysis. When voltage flicker accompanies with high order harmonics, the instantaneous frequency of its analytic signal in principle consists of two different parts, power frequency and a rapidly varying asymmetrical oscillating part. The important property of the instantaneous frequency offers a direct way to estimate the power frequency using a low-pass filter and remove the high order harmonics without pre-treatment procedures. Corresponding voltage flicker envelope is estimated using synchronous detection. The HVD method does not involves basic functions that the wavelet transform method needs. It can also adaptively estimate the frequency and amplitude of every modulation frequency component. Simulation results prove that the proposed method could accurately detect voltage flicker with high order harmonics. It has higher calculation efficiency and detection precision than wavelet transform method. Experimental results show that the new algorithm is feasible and efficient.

Ever increasing number of fatal traffic accidents around the world can be significantly reduced if modern technology is incorporated within the automobile to assess the physical condition of the driver at regular intervals during the movement of the vehicle and preventive measures are automatically taken for the safety of all concerned entities, both within the vehicle and outside the vehicle. In this paper, design of an eye blinking detector system is presented which can monitor the physical state of the driver at regular intervals during his/her driving and, if needed, can raise an audible alarm within the vehicle to alert the driver or initiate application of vehicles braking system. In case of multiple failures to raise the alertness level of the driver, the designed system can automatically inform the law enforcement authorities about the rogue driver on the road. The prototype of the design has been successfully implemented which leads to the conclusion that such a system can help in keeping the driver awake at all times while driving and hence facilitate in avoidance of any traffic accidents involving drivers alertness.
