This article presents a conceptual framework for the development of a value-based total performance excellence model (VBTPEM) in organisations. This model signifies core values as a strategic component for an organisation to achieve total performance excellence. The VBTPEM is an extension of the earlier version of the TPEM proposed by Husain et al. [Husain, N., Abdullah, M., Idris, F., & Sagir, R.M. (2001). The Malaysian total performance excellence model: A conceptual framework. Total Quality Management, 12(7&8), 926–931] and Abdullah et al. [Abdullah, M., Husain, N., & Nik Hassan, N.M. (2008). Guidelines for implementing value-based total performance excellence model in business organizations. Presentations at the The Islamic Perspective Forum, Manila, Philippines]. This extension integrates the intangible parts of performance measurement that have become a pivotal issue in many organisations. Hence, this paper discussed the core values associated with each of the criteria in the TPEM framework. The significance of the study is that it contributes to the extended version of performance measurement research by integrating core values into the total performance excellence framework. The notion of values-driven total performance excellence applies to an organisation that achieves superiority in both financial and non-financial performances due to reinforcement and internalisation of balanced, viable, aligned, and authentic core values in that organisation [Hultman, K., & Gellerman, B. (2002). Balancing individual and organisational values: Walking the tightrope to success. Hoboken, NJ: John Wiley & Sons].

Organisational performance measurement method has shifted from measuring not only the tangibles aspect but also the intangibles aspects. Tangible aspects cover financial factors such as return on capital, cash flow and profitability, while the intangible aspects are related to non-financial factors such as the organisational core values. Therefore, this article aimed to test the performance excellence model based on core values indicators. This excellence model consists of six value-based performance criteria, which are leadership, culture, productivity-focused, employee-focused, stakeholder-focused and overall performance. Each criterion is measured using six core values of performance indicators. A total of 12 hypotheses have been put forward to test the relationships amongst the six criteria of excellence in the model. The model is analysed using structural equation modeling with AMOS software version 18.0 using maximum likelihood estimation. The questionnaire was developed and distributed to the respondents in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Malaysia; out of 1,100 questionnaires distributed, 537 questionnaires were returned. The results of the modeling analysis revealed that the fit statistics of value-based performance excellence model for HEI is admissible. From the results, it is found that the leadership values have significant impact on the university culture values, employee values and the stakeholder values. Similarly, the culture values significantly affect the productivity values and employee values. Furthermore, employee values have significant influence on the productivity and stakeholder values. In addition, the productivity and stakeholder values significantly influence the university performance. However, the results of the study also found that there is no significant relationship between the leadership values and the productivity values, and between the culture values and the stakeholder values in the university settings. Furthermore, the relationship between the employee values towards university performance is found to be insignificant. From the study, it can be concluded that the relationships that are statistically significant and practically important should be given a due attention by the authorities in order to enhance the performance of the university through value-based indicators.

Culture and employee-focused criteria are important factors for the success of any organization. These factors have to be aligned with the productivity initiatives in the organization in order to gear ahead for excellence. Therefore, this article investigated the impact of culture and employee-focused criteria on productivity in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Malaysia using intangible indicators through core values. The hypothesized relationship was tested using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with the PLS estimation technique. 429 questionnaires were returned from the target population. The results of the modelling revealed that the PLS estimation confirmed all the hypotheses tested as in the hypothesized model. The results generally support significant relationships between culture values, employee-focused values and productivity-focused values. The study also confirmed the mediating role of employee-focused values for the relationship between culture values and productivity-focused values. ...

This paper discussed the descriptive analysis of staff satisfaction in education organisation. This study employed a cross-sectional study involving a total of 1042 of respondents from a university in east coast of Malaysia. The survey covers six dimensions of staff satisfaction which are leadership, staff involvement, workload, self-development, working environment and communication. From the analysis of the mean score, it reveals that the staff enjoyed moderate level of satisfaction and the findings of the study generally support the past findings in the literature. This study paved the way for in-depth investigation towards staff satisfaction at the university under study.

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is one of the non-communicable diseases and public health problems facing the worldwide population that includes Malaysia. Hitherto, the prevalence of DM becomes worsening with an estimated of 3.4 million Malaysians are diabetes sufferers and expectedly increasing year by year. Thus, this study is of great importance by regressing the medical factors that affect the blood glucose level using structural equation modelling (SEM). The SEM with partial least squares (PLS) estimation was applied to a secondary data of 644 respondents, aged ≥ 18 years in Malaysia. The data were collected in 2011 by Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH). The variables under study are blood glucose level, cholesterol level (CL), systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), waist circumference (WC) and body mass index (BMI). From the modelling analysis, it showed that the cholesterol level (CL), systolic blood pressure (SBP) and waist circumference (WC) showed a positive significant relationshi...

Diabetes mellitus is now globally considered as a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. It is associated with high rates of microvascular and macrovascular complications. Regular consumption of high caloric food, poor dietary habits and adoption of sedentary life style has been linked with the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus. The purpose of this review is; to highlight the influence of diet on HbA1c in type 2 diabetics, to explore association between HbA1c and diabetes complications and to propose a dietary consultation model for more effective diabetes care. The literature was reviewed intensively from January – March 2016 through PubMed central, Medscape, Google Scholar and other databases. The keywords and MeSH terms used in this search were “diabetes mellitus”, “glycated haemoglobin”, “type 2 diabetes mellitus”, “diet and type 2 diabetes mellitus” and “diabetes complications”. Dietary management is a superior option for glycaemic control in type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is important to keep the HbA1c level in acceptable range to delay the onset and progression of diabetes complications. In this review, various food groups that can have beneficial and adverse effects on HbA1c have been identified. Moreover, Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) stood out as the most prevalent complication of poorly managed diabetes mellitus in Saudi Arabia. The dimensions of the proposed dietary consultation model are based on the assessment of diabetics’ diabetes mellitus knowledge, dietary knowledge, dietary attitude and dietary practices. This assessment if carried out at the initial stage of Diabetes mellitus can be helpful in delaying the early onset and progression of microvascular and macrovascular diabetes complications.

Assessment is an important part in any universities programs. Various approach of assessment has been used in determining the students’ grade for the subjects. Therefore, this article discussed the empirical study for finding the best solution for determining the student grades. Several predictors for determining the students’ grades i.e. total marks were identified such as coursework marks, mid-semester marks and final exam marks. Therefore, raw data from the database for a particular semester at one university in east coast of Malaysia are used for this purpose. The Correlational analysis was used to determine the strength of the association between the three predictors and the criterion variable. Also, multiple regression analysis was used to find the best regression model for the purpose of the study. Implications of the study were also discussed.
