Segmentation of Planar Surfaces from Laser Scanning Data Using the Magnitude of Normal Position Vector for Adaptive Neighborhoods.

Diverse approaches to laser point segmentation have been proposed since the emergence of the laser scanning system. Most of these segmentation techniques, however, suffer from limitations such as sensitivity to the choice of seed points, lack of consideration of the spatial relationships among points, and inefficient performance. In an effort to overcome these drawbacks, this paper proposes a segmentation methodology that: (1) reduces the dimensions of the attribute space; (2) considers the attribute similarity and the proximity of the laser point simultaneously; and (3) works well with both airborne and terrestrial laser scanning data. A neighborhood definition based on the shape of the surface increases the homogeneity of the laser point attributes. The magnitude of the normal position vector is used as an attribute for reducing the dimension of the accumulator array. The experimental results demonstrate, through both qualitative and quantitative evaluations, the outcomes’ high level of reliability. The proposed segmentation algorithm provided 96.89% overall correctness, 95.84% completeness, a 0.25 m overall mean value of centroid difference, and less than 1° of angle difference. The performance of the proposed approach was also verified with a large dataset and compared with other approaches. Additionally, the evaluation of the sensitivity of the thresholds was carried out. In summary, this paper proposes a robust and efficient segmentation methodology for abstraction of an enormous number of laser points into plane information.

Eui-Myoung Kim; Mu-Wook Pyeon; Min-Soo Kang; Jae-Sun Park

To manage cities by using Ubiquitous technology, a U-city has recently been gaining attention in Korea. With a great deal of help from the Central Government and local governments, a series of trials to integrate the traditional complex facilities and natural items with the technical elements of the ubiquitous environment such as RFID, SoC and USN are actively in progress. Particularly, in the case of combining with the existing GIS system, they will be very efficient. and In this study, as an actual example of the application of RFID, wireless telecommunications, and GIS, RFID is introduced to manage street trees in cities and UFID is studied for a new address system in Korea. To enhance the existing management system, GPS, CDMA and a web information system are constructed and finally the three dimensional GIS system is developed.

Myoungjin Kim; Hanku Lee; Mu-Wook Pyeon; Yang Dam Eo; Dongkeun Lee; Wonsa Lee

In the real world it is very difficult to implement real-time models in uncontrolled distributed environments and to support well-defined interfaces from real-time systems to external systems. An ongoing project for ubiquitous computing environments, u-GIS based informative construction technology innovation project needs a system to handle and control various data (sensor data, visual data, equipment status data, etc.) generated from remotely distributed construction sites in real time. The main purpose of this paper is to study how to support real-time applications, to design TMO-based distributed real-time processing techniques for real industrial applications, and to develop a TMO-based real-time model with less strict real-time constraints in ubiquitous environments. We propose an easy-to-use TMO-based real-time model with less strict real-time constraints for u-GIS based informative construction technology innovation project.

This paper focuses on the development of AP (Access Points) allocation simulation programs intended to enable deployment of RTLS (Real Time Location System) in construction sites. This study aims to develop a simulation program that specifies the minimum number of APs (Access Points) and optimizes their locations. AP is a critical element in location-tracking systems in construction sites in reference to acquired 3D spatial data of structures under construction using terrestrial LiDAR, state-of-the-art field surveying technique. Achievement made herein will provide a platform for real-time monitoring system in construction sites that tracks locations of various construction resources (equipment, material, labor, etc.) and contributes to the improvement of efficiency and safety in construction projects.

Tae-Woong Jung; Jee-Hee Koo; Kyoung-Min Kim; Mu-Wook Pyeon

In this paper, we attached RFID tag on trees and compared the maximum distance that is read under rainy environment or for each recognition mode. Then, we analyzed the system’s maximum reading distance of 15 tags in total under various forestry environments such as clear day, rainy day, different reading method and different tag sizes. As an unprecedented research in the country to apply RFID to forestry, first it can provide basic information to be utilized to come up with specifications and elements for considerations to make customized tag appropriate under the forestry environment in the future. Second, this study can also be used as a foundation to make a manual for field operations which utilizes RFID under forestry environment.

Nam-Kyun Kim; Mu-Wook Pyeon; Byoung-Kil Lee; Jae-Sun Park

With advanced construction technology, bridges and tunnels become larger in scale with increasing length and depth. To improve safety of the facility and its users in stage of construction and maintenance, the need for continued measurement and monitoring rises. USN (ubiquitous sensor network) technology can enable such measurement and monitoring for road structures. This research paper identifies measurement factors in stage of construction and maintenance for bridges and tunnels, and suggests a measurement design based on the USN technology. By applying the design to a construction field, it is expected to improve safety of users through early detection of danger in structures.

Tae-Woong Jung; Mu-Wook Pyeon; Jee-Hee Koo; Jong-Hwa Kim

The purpose of this research is to establish real-world infrastructures of a future high-tech city using construction technology (CT)-IT fusion. This paper is composed of three parts; updating accurate geo-spatial database using construction drawings, providing the information of the 3D geo-spatial database via Web service. Building databases for stationary and mobile objects inside of structures and developing technologies to provide an indoor positioning service system. Developing technique about gaining/providing locational and morphological information from/to construction-related objects such as structures, workers, equipments, and building material. This research will help in the future development of U-City and autonomic integration of GIS and construction.

Recently, Spatial information technology closer to reality three-dimensional space, a variety of information services and Web-based content, to provide information services through the space. CCTV video and camera video based multi-dimensional image data in order to build real-time spatial information-based and user-built CCTV video was up-loaded to the online video you should use them. In order to use the video upload large amounts of processing is required, spatial information can be presented as an alternative to building, large amount of data as a way to effectively use big data and cloud computing.

Hanna Lee; Jun Lee; JiSun Jun; Jee-In Kim; HyuengSeok Kim; Seungchel Koun; Mu-Wook Pyeon; Hanku Lee

Various electronic devices such as a smart phone, a smart pad and a smart TV become popular. Digital content for those devices and many interesting and valuable social network services(SNS) become available for the devices. It follows that consumers want to experience same digital content and SNS using heterogeneous devices. However, it is difficult to transform every content and SNS for new types of devices in time. We propose an adaptation framework which aims to convert SNS content into various types of devices by considering their capacities, interaction types and types of SNS activities.

This paper proposes a simulator for veterinary education based on augmented reality. We selected an intravenous injection procedure for the simulation because the injection procedure is the most frequently used procedure during veterinary training and the most difficult stage for beginning veterinary students. The proposed AR simulator provides with a tangible prop, of which shape looks like a leg of a real dog. It also has an injection simulator, which receives users input and sends force feedbacks to indicate results of the injection simulation. We developed a Workbench type AR system with an LED display and cameras for visual information processing. Finally, we evaluated its performance through experiments and user studies to check its acceptance level and usability of the proposed system. We compared the proposed system with a VR based system using a monitor. The results showed that the proposed system showed better performances over these systems.
