SummaryA histopathological and electron microscopic study of the aortic wall of rabbits intoxicated withSolanum malacoxylon was performed.Histological examination showed local loss of the normal waviness of the elastic fibers and calcium deposits. Electron microscopic study of the corresponding areas showed a modified aspect of the smooth muscle cells with loss of some of their differential characteristics, especially their intracytoplasmic fibrils and densifications. The neighbouring elastic fibers showed an electron-dense peripheral band and sometimes a crystal deposit. X-ray microanalysis revealed the presence of a large amount of calcium in these crystals. Collagen fibers played no apparent role in this calcification. These findings support the idea that a local cellular alteration is necessary prior to elastic calcification. Two hypothetical mechanisms are proposed.

Arthrodesis of the stifle joint was performed on seven healthy dogs. The fusion of right or left femorotibial joint was made using external skeletal fixation by placing a transfixation of Steinmann pins that were connected with autopolimerized acrylic bars. Intra-articular structures were removed and ostectomy of articular sur faces of distal femur and proximal tibia were made. After autogenous cancellous bone graft was inserted, immobilization was placed to maintain the selected joint angle measured in the preoperative period. The functional performance was observed and radiographic evaluation was done immediately after surgery, and at 30, 60 and 90 postoperative days. Fusion of the joint was judged by microscopic and macroscopic observations. The external skeletal fixation provided early return to weight-bearing function with satisfactory functional degree. Results of this study indicated that this type of immobilization is entirely satisfactory to produce arthrodesis of the stifle joint.

SUMMARY Colonnas capsular arthroplasty indicated to treat congenital hip dysplasia in human being was modified for standardization into hip joint of dogs as a previous study to hip dysplasia treatment. Eight healthy dogs, i.e. with no hip pathology, were evaluated clinically and radiologically before and after surgical procedures. The dogs were euthanasied after a variable period of observation and studies of gross and microscopic pathology of the tissues were done. The surgical technique consisted of a cranio dorsal approach of the joint, deepening of the acetabulum, coating of the femoral head with homologous pericardium, reconstitution of the articular capsule and structures approached. The period of functional recovery varied from 20 to 45 days. From the obtained results it is concluded that the Colonnas capsular arthroplasty standardized for hip joint of dogs improve the articular congruency.

SUMMARY Reconstruction of 1cm descontinuity iatrogenic defects using autologous corticocancellous bone graft was evaluated on 21 canine mandibles. The corticocancellous bone graft was obtained from the ilium. The imobilizant devices bridging the graft bone and mandible consisted of cerclage or insertion of intramedullary pin. Possible explanation about unsuccess on bone incorporation was related to thermal necrosis produced by oscillating electro-surgical osteokut.
