The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of closed reduction and type-II external skeletal fixation for treatment of tibiotarsus fractures in domestic pigeons (Columba livia). Twelve adult domestic pigeons were used. Anesthesia was induced with xylazine and ketamine hydrochloride; the right tibiotarsus was manually fractured by digital pressure applied at the mid-diaphysis. Four Kirschner wires were placed through both cortices of the bone, two proximal and two distal to the fracture site, and, after closed reduction of the fracture, they were stabilized by two acrilic bars, one in the lateral and another in the medial surface of the tibiotarsus. Abnormalities in bone angulation were observed radiographically in five birds; however, the function of the limb was not noticeably impaired. The mean time ± standard deviation for fracture healing was 24.8 ± 4.89 days. The results of this experiment demonstrate that closed reduction and application of a type-II external skeletal fixation are effective for treatment of tibiotarsus fracture in domestic pigeons (Columba livia).

The double contrast artrography is a diagnostic method in which positive contrast material (MCP) is injected in the joint space followed by negative contrast in order to outline lesions on the articular surfaces and adjacent structures. This technique is an effective and minimally invasive procedure already consolidated in human medicine as well as in the equine species with better results than the ones achieved by using usual diagnostic methods. In dogs this is not widely applied. The present study aimed to describe and evaluate the double contrast artrography technique applied to the humeral joint of canine species to compare with artrography with MCP in the evaluation of the articular surface of humerus head, intra-articular portion of the biceps muscle tendon, and articular capsule of eleven adult dogs. The double contrast within the joint has been produced by combining a small amount of iodine-based half of positive contrast covering the articular surfaces and capsular limits and a larger amount of a negative contrast filling the intra-articular space. The information collected from four radiologists have allowed to conclude that in the evaluation of the articular surface of the humerus head the double contrast artrography technique determinates a better image than with MCP. In addition, in the evaluation of the outline of the intra-articular portion of the biceps muscle tendon the artrography with MCP produced a better image than with double contrast artrography.

Cerebral angiography is an imaging technique used to detect alterations in the blood supply of the brain. A positive contrast is injected and the image obtained by conventional radiography, computerized tomography or magnetic resonance (MRI). The present research describes the technique with the use of conventional radiography due to the rare availability of tomography or MRI equipment in veterinary practice. The objective was to evaluate the efficiency of the method in demonstrating the angiographic pattern of normal animals, to serve as a complementary exam to simple x-ray and improve the capability of detecting altered intracranial blood flow. It is concluded that the technique is capable of producing clear images of cerebral vessels and its ramifications.

The visual observation and macroscopic identification of the vessels that irrigate the corporal tissues is greatly facilitated using special stainning dyes, or using vessel distenders. In a first stage, the water soluble anilin dye ata concentration of 1%, anda commercially available gelatin powder ata concentration of 20%, ora mixture of both, were used to perfuse the vascular system of the hepatic and adjacent region of 30 dogs. The analysis of the results indicated that the combination of gelatin/anilin gives better results than the use of each dye alone.

The fracture healing in equine legs is a complex process due to species characteristics. Based in previous biomechanical study ten horses had iatrogenic metacarpal fractures reduced by external bone fixation. Each animal was evaluated by clinical, laboratorial and radiografic examination till complete recovery. No significant complication were observed, except one animal which was submitted to euthanasia. The method offers appropriate stability for bone healing.

SUMMARY A case of an ectopic left ureter in a bitch is reported. The clinical symptoms, radiological and surgical diagnostic, ureterovesical anastomosis with ureter reimplantation at the vesical trigon and post surgical evaluation through an excretory urography objecting to demonstrate the ureteral function are described.
