Abstract The synthesis of 1,3-bis(styrylsulfonyl)benzene in two isomeric forms (Z. Z and E, E) and their cyclopropanation with dimethylsulfonium methylide has been described. The configurational assignments of these compounds have been made on the basis of IR, 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectral data.

Three new aryl sulphonylacetic acids have been prepared from 2-chlorotoluene, 1,2-dichlorobenzene and 1-bromonaphthalene. The infrared spectra of these acids exhibited strong bands characteristic of carbonyl stretching frequencies of carboxylic acids. Utilising these sulphonylacetic acids some new unsaturated sulphones were synthesised. An attempt has been made to correlate the infrared and proton magnetic resonance spectral data to the configurations of unsaturated sulphones.

Abstract Some new trans-aryl cyclopropyl sulfones (II) have been prepared by the cycloaddition of dimethylsulfoxonium methylide to trans-styryl aryl sulfones (I) by two different methods. It is observed that the reaction in presence of a phase transfer catalyst proceeds in a facile manner.

The mineralogy and chemistry of banded iron formations (BIF) of Archaean high grade granulite gneiss belt of Tiruvannamalai area are presented here. The BIF of this area is chemically different from those around the world. The iron formations and associated granulites are of different origin namely metasedimentary and metavolcanic respectively.

The magnetite-quartzites of Nainarmalai forms part of a large iron ore belt of Tamilnadu which occurs in a high grade granulite terrain. They are associated with basic granulites and gneisses. Mineralogical and chemical studies indicate their similarities with other metasedimentary iron ores.
