The effects of different drying conditions, such as infrared power, drying air temperature and velocity, on quality of strawberry were evaluated. Drying time decreased with increased infrared power, air temperature and velocity. An increase in power from 100W to 300W, temperature from 60 to 80°C and velocity from 1.0m.s-1 to 2.0m.s-1 decreased fruit color quality index. For total phenol and anthocyanin content, 300W, 60°C, and 1.0m.s-1 were superior to the other experimental conditions. The drying processes increased N, P and K and decreased Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu contents. The optimal conditions to preserve nutrients in infrared drying of strawberry were 200W, 100°C and 1.5m.s-1.

BACKGROUND Although strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) species are sensitive to abiotic stress conditions, some cultivars are known to be tolerant to different environmental conditions. We examined the response of different strawberry cultivars to water stress conditions in terms of yield, quality and biochemical features. The trial was conducted under two different irrigation regimes: in grow bags containing cocopeat (control, 30%; water stress, 15% drainage) with four different cultivars (Camarosa, Albion, Amiga and Rubygem). RESULTS Fruit weight declined by 59.72% and the yield per unit area by 63.62% under water stress conditions as compared to control. Albion and Rubygem were found to be more tolerant and Amiga the most sensitive in terms of yield under stress conditions. Water stress increased all biochemical features in fruits such as total phenol, total anthocyanin, antioxidant activity and sugar contents. Among the cultivars, glucose and fructose was higher in Albion. CONCLUSION Considering the rise in global warming, identification of resistant and tolerant cultivars to stress conditions are crucial for future breeding programmes. Our results showed that some of the fruits physical features were affected negatively by stress conditions whereas many of the biochemical features such as total anthocyanin content, total phenolic content and antioxidant activity were positively modulated.

In this study, effects of various seedling types and growing media on the physical features in strawberry (Fragaria×ananassa Duch) cultivation with greenhouse soilless culture were examined. In the trial, ‘Camarosa’ cultivar was tried as cultivar; plug and frigo seedlings were tried as seedling type; and peat (T), perlite (P), cocopit (K), volcanic tuff (V) and the combinations of these are tried as growing media. As a result of the trial, the root number, root length, root volume, the weight of the fresh and dry plant under the soil, the weight of the fresh and dry plant over the soil, stem diameter, tillering number, and leaf number values in the plants removed after vegetation were determined higher in frigo seedling than in plug seedling. In terms of growing media, K and K+V media composed higher values than other media in terms of examined criteria.
