Abstract Background: This study aimed to determine the strain index (SI) of normal thyroid parenchyma in a group of healthy children, using ultrasound elastography (USE). Methods: The participants consisted of 54 healthy children. The USE of the normal thyroid parenchyma was performed by using the Hitachi Hi VisionPreirus model ultrasonography (US) device. By following sinusoidal waves at the base of the screen, regular and slight compressions and decompressions were made by the transducer. After the regular sinusoidal waves were acquired, standard region of interest (ROI) circles were used to measure the SI values of the thyroid glands by placing one ROI on a superficial part of the normal thyroid gland parenchyma and the other on the adjacent soft tissue at the same depth (within 10-mm proximity). Three measurements were obtained for each (right and left) thyroid gland, and the mean value was used for statistics. Results: The mean SI value of normal thyroid glands was 0.54±0.38 for the whole group. There was no statistically significant difference between girls and boys on the basis of age, weight, height, BMI (body mass index), and thyroid SI values (p=0.15, p=0.18, p=0.12, p=0.31, and p=0.96, respectively). No correlation was found between thyroid gland SI values and each of the following variables: age (r=0.22, p=0.15), gender (r=0.007, p=0.96), and BMI (r=0.26, p=0.09). Conclusions: The study determined the normal elasticity values of thyroid glands in healthy children. Such information can serve as a baseline from which thyroid diseases can be examined.

Clinical and Histopathological Findings of Chordomas: a Case Report

Abstract Chordomas are rare malignant tumors that develop from the residual of embryonic notochord. These tumors may be seen along the spine and have a local aggressive progression. Skull base chordomas often originate from the clivus as localization. These tumors are usually found to be overgrown when they are diagnosed. They are locally invasive and rarely develop distant metastasis. These chordomas cannot usually be completely removed due to their localization. Because these tumors are advanced at the time of diagnosis and are adjacent to important structures, they are among the tumors with high rates of mortality and morbidity. Surgery and/or radiotherapy is administered for the treatment.

Aim: The anatomic measurements of the thyroid cartilage, which is an important part of the laryngeal roof, were calculated using computed tomography (CT) and the data obtained were compared in two groups of male and female. Material and Methods: A total of 148 adult patients were examined in this retrospective, cross-sectional study. All the patients were aged over18 year and presented to emergency ward between 2015 and 2016 due to trauma. Cervical vertebra CT was taken and the reformatted two-dimensional images were examined. Measurements were taken on the images at two separate levels of the interlaminar angle (ILA), thyroid prominence angle and the distance of the vocal cords from the lower edge of the thyroid. Results: The ILA in the glottis region was measured as 74.02°±17.23° for males and as 98.00°±12.78° for females. The difference between the genders was statistically significant (p<0.001). The distance of the vocal cords from the lower edge of the thyroid cartilage was measured as 7.12 ±2.29mm for males and 5.15±2.06mm for females. Conclusion: The results of the ILA measurements in this study were observed to be narrower in both genders than the measurements given in classic reference books. The ILA in both the regionsof glottis and supraglottiswas measured as a narrower angle in males than in females. These results show the presence of sexual dimorphism in the Kahramanmaraş region where the study was conducted.
