Sifeng Liu; Naiming Xie; Jeffrey Forrest

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to solve the problems existing in traditional grey incidence models and advance several new grey incidence models based on visual angle of similarity and nearness.Design/methodology/approach – Based on the definition of traditional grey incidence models, two novel grey incidence models, grey similar incidence model and grey close incidence model, are studied in this paper. The interrelations and influence can be measured by the new models with different visual angle of similarity and/or nearness, respectively. The grey similar incidence model is used mainly to measure the similitude degree of the geometric patterns of sequence curves. The grey close incidence model is used mainly to measure the nearness of the sequence curves in space. The properties of the new models are discussed. It is proved that the proposed models are simplified methods to calculate the similitude degree and the close degree of grey incidence models.Findings – The results show that the two nove...

Sifeng Liu; Yingjie Yang; Ying Cao; Naiming Xie

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to review systematically the research of grey relation analysis (GRA) models.Design/methodology/approach – Three different approaches, the springboard to build a GRA model, the angle of view in modelling, and the dimension of objects, are analysed, respectively.Findings – The GRA models developed from the models based on relation coefficients of each point in the sequences in early days to the generalized GRA models based on integral or overall perspective. It evolved from the GRA models which measure similarity based on nearness, into the models which consider similarity and nearness, respectively. The objects of the research advanced from the analysis of relationship among curves to that among curved surfaces, and further to the analysis of relationship in three‐dimensional space and even the relationship among super surfaces in n‐dimensional space.Originality/value – The further research on GRA models is proposed. One is about the property of GRA model. An in‐dept...

Naiming Xie; Jianghui Xin; Sifeng Liu

To evaluate the regional meteorological disaster loss of China, this paper analyzed the different types of meteorological disasters, including droughts, floods, tropical storms, snowstorms and hail disasters. Based on the analysis about Chinese geographical features, the historical characteristics of different meteorological disasters are analyzed. In particular, these meteorological disasters influence to agriculture production are discussed. According to the analysis of data from 2004 to 2010, we know that the distribution characteristics are very different about different disasters. Provinces like Heilongjiang, Liaoning, Jilin, Inner Mongolia, Gansu, Shanxi and Yunnan are serious affected areas of drought influence. And Anhui, Shandong, Jiangsu, Henan, Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Guangxi, Sichuan and Heilongjiang are serious affected areas by floods and heavy rain. While Guangdong, Fujian, Zhejiang, Shanghai, Jiangsu and Shandong are mainly affected by tropical storms, Henan, Hebei, Hunan and Hubei are serious affected by snowstorms and hail disasters. Then, a novel method based on grey cluster model is constructed and combined with the regional meteorological disaster loss evaluation index system. A total of 31 provinces are considered to evaluate the integrated meteorological disaster losses. The results indicated that Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Xizang, Qinghai and Ningxia belong to the lighter loss grey class. Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Hainan, Sichuan and Gansu belong to the serious loss grey class. Other regions belong to the general loss grey class that the influence caused by meteorological disasters not better than the lighter loss grey class and not worst than the serious loss grey class.

On computational algorithms of grey numbers based on information background

Naiming Xie

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to redefine the concept of grey number with information background and to propose novel grey number algorithms.Design/methodology/approach – As the basic element of a grey system, grey number is defined as a number of which the true value is unknown because of the limited information while the boundary or possible value set can be known. Grey number algorithms are key points for constructing grey system models and helping to calculate model results. The concept of grey number is redefined with information background in this paper. Novel grey number algorithms are defined considering all the different forms of grey number information background. Several illustrative examples are applied to state the process of the proposed algorithms.Findings – The results show that the novel grey number algorithms can do the operations well no matter what the grey numbers type. It is useful to create effective grey system models and to do system analysis, forecasting, decision makin...

Forecasting energy consumption in China following instigation of an energy-saving policy

Naiming Xie; Alan Pearman

Abstract China is in a key stage of industrialization and urbanization, which brings a high economic growth rate accompanied by high energy consumption. To alleviate the unsustainable demand for energy consumption, China’s government has instigated an energy-saving policy to decrease energy consumption per unit gross domestic product (GDP) so as to improve energy efficiency. Based on analysing historical trends of energy consumption and GDP, we have applied an optimized single-variable discrete grey forecasting model [OSDGM (1, 1)] to measure the instigation effects of the energy-saving policy and forecast whether the planned reduction rate of energy consumption per unit GDP in the implementation stage could be accomplished or not. The results illustrate that China’s government has made major progress on energy saving even though the task is tough in the long run. The forecasting results indicate that it is difficult to accomplish the planned reduction rate of energy consumption per unit GDP at both the national and provincial levels. According to the economic growth rate of 2011 and 2012, nearly half of the provinces could not reach their planned reduction rate objectives. These conclusions are very important for China’s government both in terms of policy monitoring and development.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to provide a foundational reference and practical guidance for modelling small and poor data with incomplete information. Design/methodology/approach – The definitions of four basic models of GM(1, 1), such as Even Grey Model (EGM), Original Difference Grey Model (ODGM), Even Difference Grey Model (EDGM) and Discrete Grey Model (DGM), are put forward. The properties and characteristics of different models are studied and their equivalence are proved. The suitable sequences of different models are studied by simulation and analysis with homogeneous exponential sequences, nonhomogeneous exponential increasing sequences and vibration sequences. Findings – The main conclusions have been obtained as follows: first, the three discrete models of ODGM, EDGM and DGM are suitable for homogeneous exponential sequences or sequences which close to a homogeneous exponential sequence; and second the EGM are suitable for nonhomogeneous exponential increasing sequences and vibration ...

Naiming Xie

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose novel civil aircraft cost parameters’ selection method and novel cost estimation approach for civil aircraft so as to effectively simulate or forecast civil aircraft cost under poor information and small sample. Design/methodology/approach – Based on existent cost estimation indexes, this paper summarized civil aircraft research and manufacturing cost impact index system and adopted grey relational model to select most important impact factors. Consider civil aircrafts’ cost information could not be easily collected, the author must estimate their costs with limited sample and poor information. A combination model of GM (0, N) model and BP neural network algorithm is proposed. Both advantages of simulation of BP neural network algorithm and poor information generation of GM (0, N) were effectively combined. Then steps of combined model were given out. Finally, nine types of aircrafts were used to test the validity of proposed model. As comparing with the t...
