Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to advance new rules about operations of grey numbers.Design/methodology/approach – The paper first puts forward the definitions of basic element of grey number and general grey number. The operation axiom, operation rules of general grey numbers and a new algebraic system for general grey numbers are built based on the “kernel” and the degree of greyness of grey numbers.Findings – Up to now, the operation of general grey numbers has been transformed to operation of real numbers; thus, the difficult problem for set up operation of general grey numbers has been solved to a certain degree.Practical implications – The method exposed in the paper can be used to integrate information from a different source. The operation of general grey numbers could be extended to the case of grey algebraic equation, grey differential equation and grey matrix which includes general grey numbers. The operation system of general grey numbers also opened a new passageway for research on gr...

The changing of initial condition does not affect the simulative value of GM(1,1) model.Simulative value is an exponential model when actual sequence is nonnegative increased.Practical examples are used to validate the effectiveness of proposed GM(1,1). For traditional grey model (GM(1,1)), it is proved theoretically that the initial condition is not utilized, and the simulative value is convex and increased or is the decreased and concave when the actual sequence is nonnegative increased. These shortcomings are the results of traditional first order accumulation on grey system model. However, for the GM(1,1) with fractional order accumulation, the initial condition is utilized, and the monotonicity and convexity of simulative value are uncertain when the actual value is nonnegative increased. The results of practical numerical examples demonstrate that the GM(1,1) with fractional order accumulation provides very remarkable predication performance compared with the traditional GM(1,1) model.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to present two novel grey cluster evaluation models to solve the difficulty in extending the bounds of each clustering index of grey cluster evaluation models. Design/methodology/approach – In this paper, the triangular whitenization weight function corresponding to class 1 is changed to a whitenization weight function of its lower measures, and the triangular whitenization weight function corresponding to class s is changed to a whitenization weight function of its upper measures. The difficulty in extending the bound of each clustering indicator is solved with this improvement. Findings – The findings of this paper are the novel grey cluster evaluation models based on mixed centre-point triangular whitenization weight functions and the novel grey cluster evaluation models based on mixed end-point triangular whitenization weight functions. Practical implications – A practical evaluation and decision problem for some projects in a university has been studied using th...

Abstract Economic networks represent prototypes of complex evolving networks. A novel evolving multi-local-world model is proposed, and the dynamic mechanisms that govern networks’ evolution is described and analyzed. Based on the analytical model, we uncover the topological structure that characterizes both the scale-free feature and the small-world effect and further analyze the surprising emergence of characteristics mutation. Evolution mechanism of these structural properties and their implications in economy are studied. Simulation study reveals some factors that play an important part in influencing network evolution and its structural characteristics mutation. Empirical study of textile industry networks in China verifies the validity of the multi-local-world evolving model and explains its implications in economy field. Model developed in this paper provides some new insights into the evolution of social and economic networks.

Purpose – This paper attempts to select the leading industry concerning uncertain information and grey interval numbers.Design/methodology/approach – This paper combines grey system theory and the input‐output method, which describe uncertain information as interval numbers in the input‐output table. Additionally, in transforming the grey interval numbers to functions with time, the original input‐output table can be considered as a function of functions, in which functional analysis can be employed to determine important parameters. Neumann series is utilized to reverse the Leontief matrix having grey interval numbers. Based on the result, one can calculate the influence and induced coefficients of industries, which can help the decision maker to select the leading industry by comparing the overall effects of industries. A case in Wuxi city is conducted to show the feasibility of the above method.Findings – The results of this paper show that selecting the leading industry is not only based on regional t...

Algorithm of grey numbers and grey algebraic system is the theoretical basis of grey system theory. It is possessed of very important significance in the developing course of grey system theory. A definition for grey “Kernel” has been put forward first. The algorithm axiom, algorithm rules of interval grey numbers and a new algebraic system is built based on the “Kernel” and the degree of greyness of grey numbers. And the properties of the algorithm are studied. Up to now, the algorithm of interval grey numbers have been transformed to algorithm of real numbers. So, the difficult problem for set up algorithm of interval grey numbers have been solved to a certain degree. The algorithm of interval grey numbers could be extended to the case of algorithm of grey algebraic equation, grey differential equation and grey matrix which including interval grey numbers. The algorithm system of interval grey numbers also opened a new passageway for research on grey input-output and grey programming, etc.

Purpose – A study is made of the payoff matrix which is made up of grey interval number because of asymmetry information, players finite knowledge and bounded rationality and all sorts of stochastic and non‐stochastic factors.Design/methodology/approach – On the base of concept of equipollent, superior and inferior potential degree, the paper designs determinant rules of interval grey number potential relations, opens out players decision‐making laws in the conditions of finite knowledge and logos. And it designs the grey game decision‐making rules which player choices maximum potential degree of grey game value (the most favorableness situation) under the cases of that there are all likely to be minimum potential degree of grey game value (the most disadvantage situation), which is a reliable way for both sides to accept.Findings – The paper recognizes and defines overrated and underrated risk of potential optimal pure strategy in the grey game, designs arithmetic for determining players overrated and...

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to reveal the pattern of passengers transferring on occasion of a large crowd being stranded at transportation hubs (such as a bus station, railway station, airport, etc.) in climate disasters, and then propose the proper policy recommendations for the government to evacuate stranded passengers.Design/methodology/approach – A model is established based on Bayesian network and influence diagram to catch the features of a passengers decision‐making process, and the transition probabilities of passengers are revised on the basis of the theory of herd behaviors in information to describe the influence of group behaviors on passenger individuals. Subsequently, a multi‐agent model is developed in Repast platform in Java language, and simulation and analysis are also made.Findings – The results of simulation show that it is possible to apply the theory of herd behaviors and the multi‐agent method in analyzing the effectiveness of government policies on evacuating stranded...

This paper presents a commercial aircraft price forecast method based on the construction of I-GM(0,N) model. As a modification of conventional GM(0,N), the I-GM(0,N) model is established mainly for Cross sectional data simulation and forecast. After selecting price-affecting factors as well as selecting the Benchmark Ranking Sequence based on Grey Relational Analysis(GRA), the listing prices of some current commercial aircrafts are simulated by I-GM(0,N) model. Then, the price of B767-400ER has been forecasted using I-GM(0,N) with accuracy analysis on forecast result. Proved to have ideal error in simulation and forecast as well as less sensitivity to position of interior forecast point in the sequence, I-GM(0,N) is very effective in the price forecast of newly-designed commercial aircraft with better accuracy in the conceptual design phase.
