Our goal was to inventory marsupial and rodent species from two conservation units (Reserva Extrativista Chico Mendes and Estacao Ecologica do Rio Acre) of the upper Rio Acre, in Brazilian Amazonia, as well as to provide new data on the morphology and geographic distribution for several species. We recorded 25 species, including seven marsupials and 18 rodents. Among these, there are poorly sampled species in Brazil, such as Marmosa regina and Dactylomys boliviensis . We document range extensions (about 450 km towards southeastern Acre state) of Neacomys musseri , Dasyprocta fuliginosa, and Proechimys cuvieri . We also present the first confirmed record of an undescribed species of Monodelphis in Acre state and the second collecting record of Oxymycterus inca in Brazil. We describe the morphology and morphometrics of upper Rio Acre specimens of O. inca . Finally, we compare our results with other inventories in the Amazon region and discuss the high efficiency of pitfall traps for capturing nonvolant small mammals.

Timber exploitation is the most profitable and popular use of forest. To evaluate how this activity affects biodiversity is of crucial importance for conservation. Therefore, we carried out a herpetofauna survey in a forest area under a reduced–impact management, in Sena Madureira municipality, state of Acre (Brazil). We used active searching, both day and night, and pitfall traps. In the pre-exploitation phase the search was conducted basically in forests and forest edges; in the post-exploitation phase we also searched in sites such as secondary roads, skid trails and timber storage yards. We recorded 38 amphibian species and 28 reptile species; 17 snakes, nine lizards and two crocodilians. It is expected that this survey can contribute to programs of environmental monitoring in forest management areas in Amazonia.

An adult specimen of Bothrops taeniatus Wagler, 1824 was found in the Municipality of Assis Brasil, in the Rio Acre Ecological Station, Acre, Brazil. This is the first record of this species for the state of Acre, extending the species distribution globally by approximately 164 Km west.

We present a new distribution record of Liophis dorsocorallinus in the state of Acre, Brazil. The species was previously known only from three localities in Venezuela and Brazil.

Rhinella poeppigii, member of the Rhinella marina group, which currently consists of 11 species, inhabits primarily cloud forests in the central Andes of Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia, reaching lowlands adjacent to the Andes, at elevations of 260–1800 m. This work presents the first record of R. poeppigii in Brazil, from the municipality of Assis Brasil, in the state of Acre. This record extends the distribution of the species 242 km northeast of the nearest record in Explorer’s Inn, Madre de Dios province, Peru.

Ninia hudsoni is a small neotropical snake with cryptic habits. Its distribution range is currently based on scattered literature records from Brazil, Ecuador, Guyana and Peru. Here we present an updated distribution map of N. hudsoni with two new records from southern Amazon and six unpublished records found in herpetological collections. We also implemented an ecological niche modeling (ENM) to predict climatically suitable areas for the occurrence of N. hudsoni . Both historical records and ENM support that N. hudsoni is restricted to the north, south and west edges of the Amazon. Southern Venezuela and northwestern Colombia seem to be the major gaps that lack occurrence records of N. hudsoni .

We record for the first time the presence of Hypsiboas microderma in the state of Rondonia, and a new record in the state of Acre, Brazil. This treefrog is found throughout western Amazon in Brazil and no information about its distribution in Rondonia was reported previously

The snake genus Rhinobothryum Wagler, 1830 includes two species: R. bovalli Andersson 1916, distributed in Central America, northeastern Colombia and Ecuador; and R. lentigimosum (Scopoli 1785), in Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, Guiana, Suriname, French Guiana, Paraguay and Brazil (Cunha and Nascimento 1993). In Brazil R. lentiginosum was recorded in the Amazon, for the states of Rondônia, Pará, Amapá, Amazonas and Mato Grosso (Cunha and Nascimento 1993; Martins and Oliveira 1998; Frota et al. 2005; Bernarde and Abe 2006; França et. al. 2006).
