“Psychological” elements in business cycle theories: old approaches and new insights

Abstract This paper identifies a number of “psychological” elements in business cycle theories and shows how these components contribute to the theories’ results. It proceeds by discussing (i) which assumptions on behaviour were used, laying particular stress on expectations and confidence, money illusion, social preferences and interaction, and individual character traits; (ii) how they influenced and determined the theories’ results; and (iii) how more recent behavioural research provides a better and empirically grounded understanding of these factors. For each element, the possibility of incorporating new insights into older models is discussed, and references to work which already does so are given.

Business cycles in the economy and in economics: an econometric analysis

It is sometimes pointed out that economic research is prone to move in cycles and react to particular events such as crises and recessions. The present paper analyses this issue through a quantitative analysis by answering the research question of whether or not the economic literature on business cycles is correlated with movements and changes in actual economic activity. To tackle this question, a bibliometric analysis of key terms related to business cycle and crises theory is performed. In a second step, these results are confronted with data on actual economic developments in order to investigate the question of whether or not the theoretical literature follows trends and developments in economic data. To determine the connection between economic activity and developments in the academic literature, a descriptive analysis is scrutinized by econometric tests. In the short run, the VARs with cyclical fluctuations point out multiple cases where economic variables Granger-cause bibliometric ones. In the long run, the fractionally cointegrated VARs suggest that many bibliometric variables respond to economic shocks. In the multivariate framework, the Diebold–Mariano test shows that economic variables significantly improve the quality of the forecast of bibliometric indices. The paper also includes impulse-response function analysis for a quantitative assessment of the effects from economic to bibliometric variables. The results point towards a qualified confirmation of the hypothesis of an effect of business cycles and crises in economic variables on discussions in the literature.

Die Auswirkungen der Automatisierung auf Wachstum, Beschäftigung und Ungleichheit

Zusammenfassung Die Automatisierung ist eines der wichtigsten Phänomene, über die aktuell innerhalb der Wirtschaftswissenschaften und in der breiteren Öffentlichkeit diskutiert wird. Dabei finden sich sehr unterschiedliche Positionen: Pessimisten verweisen auf die negativen Beschäftigungseffekte, wenn Menschen mehr und mehr durch Maschinen ersetzt werden und ihre am Markt angebotene Arbeitsleistung somit obsolet wird. Gleichzeitig gilt die Automatisierung auch als Ursache für einen Anstieg der wirtschaftlichen Ungleichheit. Optimistische Stimmen erinnern an die Entwicklung seit der Industriellen Revolution, die mit hohem Produktivitätswachstum und starken Wohlfahrtssteigerungen durch fortlaufende technologische Veränderungen einherging, ohne dass es langfristig zu Massenarbeitslosigkeit gekommen ist. In diesem Survey präsentieren die Autoren empirische Daten und skizzieren ein einfaches Wachstumsmodell, das einen ersten Einblick in die zu erwartenden ökonomischen Auswirkungen der Automatisierung erlaubt. Anschließend vertiefen und erweitern sie die Ergebnisse unter Bezugnahme auf die aktuelle wissenschaftliche Literatur. Aus den verschiedenen Ansatzpunkten und Überlegungen leiten sie schließlich wirtschaftspolitische Handlungsmöglichkeiten ab und erörtern deren Einschränkungen.
