Design and implementation of DCAS user terminal

Woongshik You; Jinhwan Lee; Yong Seong Cho; O-Hyung Kwon; Soo In Lee; Oh-Seok Kwon

This paper presents an efficient design and implementation of user terminal for Downloadable Conditional Access System (DCAS). The DCAS system enables cable operators to flexibly change and update their Conditional Access Systems (CAS) without hardware changes by downloading CA applications through Hybrid Fiber Coaxial (HFC) network. In order to do this, the DCAS user terminal provides DCAS functionalities including CA client download and update through DCAS protocol. The proposed design and implementation in this paper can be used to develop advanced DCAS user devices such as smart phone supporting broadcasting and communication converged services.

Content-based video retrieval by indexing object's motion trajectory

Woongshik You; Kyu Won Lee; Jae-Gon Kim; Jin Woong Kim; Oh-Seok Kwon

We propose a video retrieval scheme indexing the objects motion trajectory information. The motion trajectories of moving objects are partitioned by fixed time intervals. Each segmented motion trajectory is described using the coefficients of 2/sup nd/ order polynomials that represent the centroids of the moving objects in time evolution. The set of polynomial coefficients is used as a motion trajectory descriptor. The proposed scheme provides small-sized indexing and low matching complexity.

Over the last few years, deep learning has produced breakthrough results in many application fields including speech recognition, image understanding and so on. We try to deep learning techniques for real-time facial expression recognition instead of hand-crafted feature-based methods. The proposed system can recognize human emotions based on facial expressions using a webcam. It can detect faces and recognize users with a distance of 2~3m for TV environment. And it can determine whether a user is feeling happiness, sadness, surprise, anger, disgust, neutral or any combination of those six emotions. The experimental results show that the proposed method achieves high accuracy. It can be used for various services such as consumer behavior research, usability studies, psychology, educational research, and market research.

GRAPPE: a system for determining optimal connecting route to target person based on mutual intimacy index

Kimun Keum; Sejin Nam; Yongho Kang; Oh-Seok Kwon

Recently, the growth of social network service (SNS, Facebook) has required the search technique to utilize its distinctive characteristic which links people to people. This paper discusses the design and implementation of GRAPPE which suggests the ranked list of optimal connecting routes between two people by interaction like SNS, phone calls, texts, mails. It is based on mutual intimacy index (MII) which indicate how closely two people are related. MII is calculated periodically when a user interact with other person by smartphone. In this study, we propose a simple two-ended search method for finding optimal routes between a source person and a destination person. For the real-time service it searches optimal path within 3 step-away relationship in human network that is effective in real life while existing services in SNS usually provide one-ended search on entire paths. Furthermore, we also use the pruning technique for efficient execution time.

This paper presents a UHDTV transmission scheme using broadcasting channel bonding which transmits a UHDTV program through multiple broadcasting channels. A signaling method is also introduced for providing service information about the UHDTV program transmitted over multiple broadcasting channels.

Sensory effect representation for barrier-free broadcasting service

Ji Hoon Choi; Chung Hyun Ahn; Jeongil Seo; Oh-Seok Kwon

Realistic media broadcasting service must be for deaf-blind peoples who could not be immersed in emotion by senses of sight or hearing because the existing barrier-free broadcasting service supports just descriptive information about contents. This paper proposes an authoring, transmission, and representation method of the sensory effect metadata for the barrier-free broadcasting service. Finally, this paper explains the test result and the feasibility of sensory effect representation devices.

User interest visualizing and analysing system using eye gaze

Injae Lee; Jihun Cha; Jeongil Seo; Oh-Seok Kwon

Eye tracking technology is useful to provide faster and more intuitive control interface. Thus, eye tracking is popular in evaluating contents such as advertisements. It have helped researchers to analyse the users attention and it finally makes more contents better. This paper introduced the system for visualizing and analysing users gaze information. Detailed implementation of the proposed system and its capabilities are presented along with usage examples. This system can be applied to various fields such as analysis of driver attention, web page layout, advertisement effectiveness, product sales, and so on.

Multi-modal Interaction System for Smart TV Environments

Injae Lee; Jihun Cha; Oh-Seok Kwon

This paper presents a multi-modal interaction system based on gaze tracking and gesture recognition. It allows a user to select a specific menu or object by gazing at them, and then control them by hand gesture recognition. It will give users a convenient way to consume various multimedia in smart TV environment.

Analysis and simulation of broadcast channel bonding for massive UHD contents transmission

Woongshik You; Joon-Young Jung; Dong-Yul Lee; Myung-ae Chung; Oh-Seok Kwon

This paper presents the results of mathematical analysis and simulation of broadcast channel bonding for transmitting massive UHD contents. Analysis and simulations have been performed to verify the performance of the channel bonding scheme in terms of allowable skew budget between bonded broadcast channels. When the data rate of UHD contents is fixed, the skew budget is independent of the number of bonded broadcast channels needed to transmit the contents. The skew budget is in inverse proportion to the data rate of UHD contents to be transmitted and the highest TS packet ratio having same PID value.

Research on Augmented Reality Services in Bridge for Navigational Safety

Jaeyong Oh; Sekil Park; Sun-Young Kim; Oh-Seok Kwon

As maritime traffic increases and ships get bigger and faster, the risk of maritime accident increases. According to the recent reports on maritime accidents, more than 80% of the maritime accidents occur due to navigational mistakes and/or human errors. Even though many kinds of navigation systems based on new technology have been developed to reduce maritime accidents, we need to research the method for expressing and providing information. The efficient navigation system should be able to display information simply and intuitively to make decision quickly and accurately. In this paper, we proposed augmented reality based navigation system which can be utilized in bridge of the ships and described the services for navigational safety.
