Betül Polat Demir; Ömer Kutlu

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of electronic portfolio applications on 6th graders’ research skills. Exploratory design, one of the mixed methods in which qualitative and quantitative techniques are both used, was employed in the study. Whilepretest-posttest paired control group design, one of the the quasi-experimental designs, was used for the study’s quantitative dimension; case study, one of the qualitative research designs, were used for the study’s qualitative dimension. The study group was made up of 64 6th graders attending two different public middle schools during the second semester of 2014-1015 academic year. Participants numbered 34 in the experimental group and 30 in the control group. During the process, Research Skills Teaching Program (RSTP), developed by the researcher, was administered to experimental and control groups to develop research skills. While electronic portfolio applications were carried out with the students in the experimental group, no other application was carried out with the students in the control group. The application was carried out for 10 weeks and a total of 21 periods for both of the groups. Used for the research, the electronic portfolio portal was developed by web design specialists after the researcher defined the process. While the study’s quantitative data were collected by Research Skills Test qualitative data were collected by Semi-Structured Interview Form. The data obtained from the study’s quantitative dimension were analyzed with Independent Samples T-Test and Paired Samples T-Test. For the qualitative dimension of the study, the data obtained through interviews were analyzed using content analysis method. The quantitative findings obtained at the end of the study reveal that RSTP increased the research skills of students in the control group. In addition, research findings reveal that research skills education based on electronic portfolio applications increased the experimental group students’ level of using research skills significantly compared to control group students. Qualitative findings obtained at the end of the study support the quantitative findings. Qualitative findings showed that electronic portfolio applications were effective on development of students’ research skills and students’ attitudes and interests towards research.

Ekonomik Bakımdan Dezavantajlı Öğrencilerin Akademik Yılmazlık Düzeylerinin Bazı Koruyucu Faktörler Açısından İncelenmesi

Hatice Çiğdem Yavuz; Ömer Kutlu

The main aim of this study was to investigate whether certain variables namely school attachment, perceived social support, cognitive flexibility and gender can predict the resilience of senior high school students that are economically disadvantaged. Another aim of the research is to reveal the relation between the level of academic resilience and gender variable. This study also seeks to examine the differences between academically resilient students with different levels of resilience in terms of the stated variables. For these purposes, a quantitative research method, a correlational research model, was used. The participants consisted of 304 senior students enrolled in 18 Anatolian High Schools during the 2014-2015 academic year in the three districts of the Ankara province, Turkey. Data was collected using ‘the Resilience Scale for Adults’, ‘School Attachment Scale for Children and Adolescents’, ‘the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support’, ‘Cognitive Flexibility Inventory’ and the student information form which was designed by the authors. To analyze the collected data, a Standard Multi Regression Analysis, a Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) and a Chi-square Test were employed. The results of the Multi Regression Analysis revealed that cognitive flexibility and perceived social support significantly predicted the level of academic resilience of economically disadvantaged high school students. However, school attachment was not found to be a significant predictor. The three variables given above accounted for approximately 41% of variance in the resilience scores of the participants. Furthermore, the results obtained from MANOVA showed no difference between students with high and low academic resilience in terms of cognitive flexibility, school attachment and perceived social support. Moreover, there was a significant relationship between the two groups in terms of gender according to the results of the Chi-square Test.

The Perception of Testing in Pupil’s Drawings

Ayça Karaşahinoğlu; Ömer Kutlu

The aim of this research was to reveal 5th grade middle school students’ perceptions of testing (examination) using their drawings (pictures). The students were asked to draw a picture that reflected their ideas about the concept of testing. This qualitative research was based on a phenomenological model. The sample of the study was 250 students attending a private middle school with branches in different provinces of Turkey. The collected data was analyzed in order to reveal the implicit content. According to the results of the content analysis, the students’ drawings on their perception of the concept of testing were classified into 12 categories. The most and least represented categories were found to be anxiety and intelligence, respectively. The student drawings included in the categories of anxiety, grade anxiety, threat, and punishment constituted 60.7% of all the drawings, indicating that the students generally had a negative perception concerning exams. Although the drawings appear to be entertaining, they do provide evidence of the psychological effects of exams on students

Görme Engelli Öğrencilere Yönelik Bilgisayar Ortamında Bireye Uyarlanmış Test Tasarımı

Selma Şenel; Ömer Kutlu

Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT), a product of scientific advancements and new technologies in the field of measurement and evaluation in education, may be considered beneficial in reaching more valid and reliable test results for students with visual impairment. CAT renders more reliable test results in less time with fewer items that are well-matched to the ability levels of students. When these basic properties of CAT are considered, we can state that the use of CAT in assessing the ability levels of students with visual impairment may provide a significant step in attaining fair and comparative test results. The aim of this research is to develop audio-based CAT software for visually impaired students and to guide future studies by providing assessment, development, and design procedures. We created an item pool comprised of 166 audible items to assess the listening comprehension levels of students with visual impairment at secondary school. We have reported all data that indicate the validity and reliability scores through test development process, such as the acquisition analyses, expert opinions, pre-trial application (n=196), trial application (n=608), assumptions for the Item Response Theory. We have depicted of all the steps of software development on the basis of multimedia design principles in detail. Parameter estimates and software development studies were made according to 3 parameter logistic model. During item development and software testing, opinions of 7 students with visual impairment were considered. As a result, a valid and reliable CAT, named SesliTest , has been developed for students with visual impairment at secondary school. The research carries great importance since it proves CAT is applicable for students with visual impairment.

Identifying the Relationships between Motivational Features of High and Low Performing Students and Science Literacy Achievement in PISA 2015 Turkey

Seval Kula Kartal; Ömer Kutlu

In this study, the predictive roles of intrinsic and instrumental motivations, science self-efficacy on success in the lower and upper quartiles of score distribution are analyzed in scientific domain of PISA 2015 Turkey sample. Since their index values can’t be calculated due to missing values, some students are excluded from the sample and the study sample is comprised of 5287 students. Regression models in which intrinsic and instrumental motivation, science self-efficacy are predictive variables and success is response variable are formed for the lower and upper quartiles of score distribution of science literacy. Models are analyzed by quantile regression analysis. It is found that self-efficacy in science, intrinsic and instrumental motivations towards science are significant predictors of science success. The predictive roles of science self-efficacy and intrinsic motivation towards science are much more effective in the upper quartile of score distribution than the lower quartile. Instrumental motivation has significant relationship with science success only in the lowest and highest 10 th percentages. Based on these results, suggestions are made both for researchers and teachers regarding the classroom activities, assessment processes and possible future studies that might be conducted related with the success and motivation of the students.

Comparison of two test methods for VIS: paper-pencil test and CAT

Selma Şenel; Ömer Kutlu

Abstract This paper examines listening comprehension skills of visually impaired students (VIS) using computerised adaptive testing (CAT) and reader-assisted paper-pencil testing (raPPT) and student views about them. Explanatory mixed method design was used in this study. Sample is comprised of 51 VIS, in 7th and 8th grades. 9 of these students were interviewed for determining student views about tests. Results indicated that scores obtained from CAT are significantly lower than scores obtained from raPPT. Additionally, a positive and high correlation was found between scores of CAT and raPPT. This result suggests that similar ability estimations were made by CAT and raPPT. Another finding is CAT made more reliable predictions, and was completed in shorter duration using fewer items. In qualitative part, student views were gathered through interviews and content analysis revealed three themes as technical features, test features, and psychological effects. In general, students reported positive views about CAT. VIS prefer CAT due to its listening/control options, shorter test durations, clarity of reading, and fairness of test, elimination of dependency to reader. Study provides implications for test developers and test-users to consider CAT as a multi-accommodation for VIS through its advantages.
