Distribution Systems Operation Considering Energy Storage Devices and Distributed Generation

Oscar Danilo Montoya; Alejandro Grajales; Alejandro Garces; Carlos A. Castro

In this paper, a non-linear programming model to operate distribution systems considering energy storage devices and distributed generation is presented. Mathematical formulation is made taking in to account four terms for minimization: The cost operation of the electrical grid, reducing greenhouse emissions, reduction of electrical losses in conductors and voltage profile improve. As model constraints are employed the active a reactive nodal power balance, maximum capacities from distributed generation and energy storage devices, and the voltage profile regulation. To solve the proposed mathematical model a commercial optimization software GAMS and CONOPT solver are employed. To verify the efficiency and applicability of the model developed are used two test nodes 9 and 10, which have been adapted to the typical operating conditions of Colombian distribution systems. The results show the ability to adapt to various conditions and operating instructions of the utility.

Optimal Location of Protective Devices Using Multi-objective Approach

Oscar Danilo Montoya; Ricardo Alberto Hincapié; Mauricio Granada

In this paper a multi-objective model for the problem of optimal location of reclosers and fuses in power electric distribution systems is presented, considering the possibility of fuse rescue through the coordinated operation with reclosers and continuous operation with fuses of repetition. The problem is presented based on a mixed integer non-linear programming model with four objectives of minimization: Average System Interruption Frequency Index (ASIFI), System Average Interruption Frequency Index (SAIFI), Momentary Average Interruption Frequency Index (MAIFI) and the cost of the protective elements, and a set of non-linear technical and economic constraints. A Non-dominated Sorted Genetic Algorithm (NSGA II) is used as solution technique. In addition to this, the mathematical model presented for the MAIFI and SAIFI indices, is evaluated in the commercial optimization package of GAMS, in order to meet a global optimum from the one-objective point of view. The methodology proposed is assessed in two test systems from the literature highlight the efficiency of the presented model in improving system reliability while reducing associated costs.

Optimal location, sizing and operation of energy storage in distribution systems using multi-objective approach

Luis Fernando Grisales; Alejandro Grajales; Oscar Danilo Montoya; Ricardo Alberto Hincapié; Mauricio Granada; Carlos A. Castro

A multi-objective methodology for locating, sizing and operation of energy storage devices in distribution systems considering a typical load curve on a horizon of 24 hours is presented. The objective functions of the problem are minimization of power losses and the installation cost of the energy storage devices. The proposed methodology considers two optimization stages through a master-slave optimization algorithm. In master stage, the planning and sizing of the battery banks is done by using a multi-objective optimization algorithm called non dominated sorting genetic algorithm II, which defines the nodes where there will be batteries and their storage capacity. In slave stage, a tabu search optimization algorithm is used, which defines what is the best operation scheme for each battery configuration generated in the previous stage. The IEEE 33-nodes test feeder is used to validate the proposed methodology. The results show the robustness and efficiency of the approach proposed in this paper.
