Teflon® AF is truly a family of amorphous fluoropolymers with an extraordinary combination of properties. All of the excellent properties of the existing fluoropolymers have either been retained or improved upon and properties arising from the amorphous nature and the presence of microvoids in the AF family of polymers have been added. The similarities and differences of AF and other Teflon® polymers are summarized in Table 2.3. This unique combination of properties of Teflon® AF amorphous fluoropolymers makes them well suited for applications that had previously precluded polymeric materials.

Abstract New data are presented on the antimony pentafluoride catalyzed reaction of hydrofluorocarbons such as CH3F, CH2F2, CH3CHF2 and RfCH2CH2F with fluoroolefins. The condensation of CH2F2 and fluoroolefins CF2CFX (X=F, CF3) proceeds under mild conditions producing the corresponding propanes FCH2CFXCF3 in moderate to high yield. Under similar conditions methyl fluoride reacts with tetrafluoroethylene giving CH3CF2CF3. However, a complex mixture of products forms in the analogous reaction with hexafluoropropene. The structures of the products of the reactions of CH3CHF2 and tetrafluoroethylene and F-butylethylene were determined.

Teflon® AF is a family of amorphous fluoropolymers with glass transition temperatures as high as 300° based on bis-2,2-trfluoromethyl-4,5-difluoro-1,3-dioxole, (I), which has unusual properties [1–3] (Figure 1). The family retains the superior electrical, chemical resistance and thermal properties associated with fluoropolymers. In addition the polymers have high optical clarity, limited solubility in some commercially available perfluorinated ethers such as Fluorinert® FC-75 and improved physical properties below their glass transition temperatures (Figure 2). Teflon® AF polymers may be either solution cast into clear micron thin films or melt processed into a variety of forms.

Abstract Teflon® AF is a new family of amorphous fluoropolymers base on bis-2,2-trifluoromethyl-4,5-difluoro-1,3,-dioxole, (I), which has unsual properties. In addition to the superior electrical, chemical resistance and thermal properties associated with fluoropolymers the Teflon® AF family possesses glass transition temperatures as high as 300° resulting in improved physical characteristics. The polymers have extremely high optical clarity and have limited solubility in some commercially available perfluorinated ethers. Teflon® AF polymers may be either solution cast into clear micron thin films or melt processed into a variety of forms. The preparation of (I) is described together with some of its chemical reactions and polymerization with a variety of comonomers. Teflon® is the Du Pont Companys registered trademark for its fluorocarbon resins.
