Reflections for a nursing epistemology

Based on a literature review, we propose to reflect on the nature of nursing knowledge, resulting in a synthesis. Human responses unfold on a stage of unpredictability, with the complexity of human beings and contexts, requiring robust conceptual framework for their understanding. The dialogic, hologramatic and recursive organizational principles are a starting point for understanding the facilitating action of transition processes for welfare. The answers to welfare and health problems, beyond the simple transfer of knowledge, are structured by and for practical action in a swinging movement from practice to theory and back to practice. Nursing finds the epistemological field as a practical human science with public and private knowledge, a process of translation in which knowledge is produced and implemented in a hermeneutical spiral. desCRiptoRs: Nursing. Health-promoting behaviors: psychometric properties of an assessment tool

Com o objetivo de avaliar as propriedades psicometricas de um instrumento de avaliacao dos niveis de comportamentos promotores de saude, bem como de conhecer esses mesmos niveis numa amostra de 1213 adolescentes portugueses, em relacao a sua idade, sexo e ano de escolaridade, foi realizado este estudo, de carater quantitativo, descritivo-correlacional, retrospetivo e transversal. O instrumento apresenta bons valores de consistencia interna (Cronbachs Alpha de 0,889) e razoaveis correlacoes entre itens (entre -0,009 e 0,788), confirmando-se os seis fatores definidos pelos autores da escala. Os niveis de comportamentos promotores de saude na amostra sao bons (x=3,70), sendo mais elevados nas raparigas do que nos rapazes, e nos jovens mais novos em detrimento dos mais velhos. Demonstra-se assim a fiabilidade do instrumento na avaliacao dos comportamentos promotores de saude nos adolescentes portugueses, e a necessidade de uma intervencao em saude, nesta populacao.Aiming to evaluate the psychometric properties of an instrument to assess the levels of health promoting behaviors, as well as to encounter those same levels...

Autocuidado: la contribución teórica de Orem para la disciplina y profesión de Enfermería

Background: As a practical human science, Nursing creates and uses an exclusive body of knowledge, affirming itself as a scientific discipline with its own...Background: As a practical human science, Nursing creates and uses an exclusive body of knowledge, affirming itself as a scientific discipline with its own characteristics. Theoretical thinking has evolved in a journey of major conceptual richness, thus generating theories and concepts with interpretative value of nurses’ performance. One of the most often cited theories is the Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory (SCDNT) of Dorothea Orem, which was developed between 1959 and 1985 and incorporated the nursing model proposed by the author. Objective: To critically address the SCDNT through a theoretical study, which implied the reading, analysis and discussion of different bibliographic materials. Main topics under analysis: The SCDNT and associated conceptual terms. Conclusion: As a particular combination of conceptual properties common to all nursing circumstances, the SCDNT is relevant to guide nursing knowledge, clinical practice, education and management, as well as create structures from which other theories and concepts are developed.
