Abstract How to align business analytics with process orientation initiatives and how management can influence a synergistic accomplishment of these two elements in order to streamline organizational performance is a foremost managerial issue. By means of a quantitative research effort, a study was designed to investigate the relationships among these constructs. Empirical data were collected in 2011 from a survey of 368 large and mid-sized industrial and service companies headquartered in Brazil. A quantitative analysis was performed, and both the reliability and validity of the scales were evaluated prior to using structural equation modeling. The results demonstrate that the direct effects among BPO, analytical indicators and performance can be taken as statistically significant. The findings also demonstrate that BPO and analytical indicators can be taken as predictors of performance. The paper discusses these results and their managerial implications, as well as some research paths for future studies on the topic.

This article compiles the main findings of a study that aimed to investigate the nature of the relationships between business process orientation (BPO) constructs, analytical indicators, and competitive performance from a sample of 368 large and midsized Brazilian companies that are present in different sectors of industry and services operations within the Brazilian economy. By means of a survey, this research involved the use of hypothesis testing and bivariate and multivariate statistical techniques. Tests were carried out to measure the internal consistency of the research tool scales as well as to assess the model structure using structural equation modeling. Both the scales and the model were validated. The results show the strategic importance of BPO factors and analytical indicators as predictors of competitive performance of companies. Through the structural equation model, these predictive factors explained 66.3% of the variation in performance of the companies in the sample, and the direct effects (path coefficients) found among BPO constructs, analytical indicators, and performance were also significant.

The Transnationalization of Brazilian Companies: Lessons from the Top Twenty Multinational Enterprises

Paulo Tarso Vilela de Resende; André Almeida; Jase R. Ramsey

Emerging market multinational enterprises (MNEs) have had difficulties making decisions involving their international strategic plans. These difficulties stem largely from the lack of a historical foundation for making decisions on international trade and investment, due to the relatively recent appearance of these firms as important players in the international arena. This makes it difficult to predict what might become a future success or failure in global markets. Brazilian MNEs are also experiencing these same obstacles, related to a lack of familiarity with the transnationalization process. However, in recent years, their degree of transnationalization has increased, as evidenced by a number of companies that appear regularly in the “Top Twenty Brazilian MNEs” ranking.

RELACIONAMENTOS COLABORATIVOS E DESEMPENHO COMPETITIVO DE EMPRESAS BRASILEIRAS

Mariana Ribeiro De Castro; Marcelo Bronzo; Paulo Tarso Vilela de Resende; Marcos Paulo Valadares de Oliveira

Interorganizational collaborative relationships represent potential sources of competitive advantage, especially in the context of critical processes management in supply chains. Collaboration between companies can be critical to minimize the risk of opportunistic behavior between partners and to influence the optimal use of complementary resources between economic agents. The purpose of this paper is to describe the nature of the relationship between supply chain collaboration and competitive performance, evaluating the effect of information systems and technology as moderators of the relationship between collaboration and performance. Using structural equation modeling to analyze data from a sample of 368 Brazilian companies, it was found that collaboration positively influences the company’s competitive performance and information systems and technologies act as moderators in the relationship between collaboration and performance.Interorganizational collaborative relationships represent potential sources of competitive advantage, especially in the context of critical processes management in supply chains. Free Trade and Transportation Infrastructure in Brazil: Towards an Integrated Approach

Paulo Tarso Vilela de Resende; Joaquim José Martins Guilhoto; Geoffrey J. D. Hewings

In the development of models analyzing the impacts of free trade agreements between countries or regions within countries, relatively little attention has been paid to potential limitations imposed by transportation infrastructure. In free trade blocks such as those represented by the European Union or the USA and Canada part of NAFTA, the implicit assumption of little or no impact imposed by transportation infrastructure may be justified. However, in the case of MERCOSUL in South America, this assumption may need to be challenged. In this paper, an illustration of a potential approach to this problem will be illustrated with reference to Brazil. Attention will be devoted to the way in which the potential gains from free trade within MERCOSUL were mapped onto a highway transportation network to identify the creation of additional bottlenecks and point out the need of highway improvements once the impacts of economic development result in higher transportation costs due to such bottlenecks.
