Design for reliability of a vehicle transmission system

Predrag Popović; Gradimir Ivanovic; Radivoje Mitrovic; Aleksandar Subic

Robust vehicle design for improved reliability and quality has been one of the key areas of interest in the automotive industry for a number of years. Based on this approach, reliability is designed into the vehicle following a rigorous vehicle design and development process coupled with appropriate design methods, such as failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), quality function deployment (QFD), design of experiments (DoE), the Taguchi method, and others. While significant progress has been achieved to date in improving the reliability and quality of vehicles, there is still some need to incorporate parts and subsystems with specific reliability functions within the vehicle system reliability model early in the design concept stage and throughout the vehicle design process so that the reliability of systems and subsystems can be designed-in with more confidence. A comprehensive design for reliability model for critical vehicle systems and subsystems coupled with the failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) method could help identify and alleviate potential failure modes, and hence maximize vehicle reliability. This article proposes a design for reliability process that aims to achieve this particular outcome in the case of a mechanical vehicle transmission system. A detailed case study involving design for reliability of a vehicle transmission system is presented.

Globe valves have widespread application in various industrial sectors. Due to this variety, valve is subjected to different working loads (static, dynamic, thermal etc.) that can cause valve failures. In this paper, the analysis is performed on globe valve subjected to external axial loading caused by pipeline dilatations. Experimental analysis was focused on determining local mechanical properties of critical areas, i.e. on local areas of globe valve housing with high geometrical discontinuities. Experimental analysis and numerical model verification were performed using system Aramis based on Digital Image Correlation method. Using full-field experimental results, numerical model behavior was improved and enabled acquiring more accurate results in transition areas that cannot be found in currently available literature. Determining local mechanical properties of critical areas enables better understanding of complex structures such as valve housing and provides an opportunity for further development and improvement for practical industrial application.

Integration of the Technical Product Risk Assessment within the ISO 31000 Enterprise Risk Management Concept

Mirko Djapic; Predrag Popović; Ljubomir Lukic

Throughout the 1990s, the European Union achieved, through introducing the New and Global Approach to technical harmonization and standardization, significant improvements to conformity assessment of products, by integrating safety requirements into the design process. This was achieved through preventative analysis and quantification of risk levels, with the objective of determining the scope of the required safety systems. On the other hand, we have witnessed the rapid development and implementation of holistic approaches to risk management in enterprises, collectively known as Enterprise Risk Management (ERM). Along these lines, this chapter presents the basis of the New and Global Approach, and provides a proposal for the integration of New Approach Directives risk assessment into the holistic approaches of risk management in organizations, such as ERM.

Methodology design for reliability power transmission systems of vehicles

Predrag Popović; Gradimir Ivanovic

With the worldwide competition being so strong, it is essential for motor vehicles to have high reliability. The methodology for motor vehicle reliability design, namely Power Transmission (PT) of vehicle, is one of the ways to reach this objective. The stage of design is the most important one in the life cycle of a motor vehicle. Reliability design, within the designing stage, correlates directly with the vehicle reliability. The problem of a practical vehicle design methodology has been solved by developing a methodology suited to the purpose. The basis of the developed methodology represents a contemporary approach to designing, comprising the phases of conceptual, preliminary and detail designs, with applying of the reliability design method within these phases.

Creative Problem Solving Methods in Education Field and Compare Classic and Matrix 2003

Nebojša Stefanović; Radivoje Mitrovic; Predrag Popović

TRIZ - is the method enabling stimulation of creative problem solving by way of using the developed knowledge bases, similar system functioning and contradictions removal. The system of education is one of the most complex social systems, burdened with multiple contradictions. The education system’s contradictions comprise wishes of parents versus capabilities of children, wishes of teachers versus educational institution capabilities, etc., so that the need arises for presenting the assembling of educational requirements of the society for improving the level of education, versus writing new educational plans, by way of improved technical resources of the society. Being creative, the TRIZ method is an important part of the technological education program at high schools of professional studies and at faculties in the course of studying. An important link to TRIZ method application in education is envisaging of teachers’ perceptions in the education technology, which is the first step towards introducing TRIZ method into the educational plan and program at lower educational levels as well. By updating the classical contradiction matrix, there originated the 2003 matrix which takes into consideration and envisages frequency of innovative principles occurrence, thus rendering a significant progress in TRIZ method developing and application. The paper offers and develops application of new models of education management by way of TRIZ method, by the relocation innovative principles of classical and 2003 contradiction matrixes, with the special contribution of applying creative principles in the field of education.
