This study aims to evaluate accuracy of projections in diametric Araucaria Forest, using models of the transition matrix and movement ratio, applied in three temporal amplitude (2, 3 and 4 years), and two employees amplitudes diameter classes (5 and 10cm). The information used in the study are from permanent plots established in the National Forest of Sao Francisco de Paula - RS. The efficiency of the projections was verified based on observed values, using Kolmogorov Smirnov test and analysis of variance. Although they have been influenced by the Markovian properties, projections carried out showed efficiency to describe the future structure of the forest, but the model the movement ratio projections generated more efficient compared to those described by the transition matrix. The time span of 4 years applied the range of 5cm diameter class had the most accurate results of the study overestimated by 1.7% the total number of individuals in the forest.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of selective logging on the growth dynamics of Araucaria angustifolia in a natural forest of Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. Treatments were based on percentage reduction of the basal area per DBH class, namely, T0 (control) = 0%; T1 (light selective logging) = reduction of 20-30%; T2 (moderate selective logging) = reduction of 40-50%. Data were obtained prior to the management interventions and four, eight and 13 years after selective logging. Changes between treatments were assessed using the following parameters: absolute density, absolute dominance, importance value index, and growth rates. Results show that population reduction and canopy opening provided greater recruitment and higher growth rates for araucaria in the management treatments (T1 and T2) compared with those of the control treatment (T0). These results reinforce that management practices are necessary for the continuous development of araucaria in this forest formation.

The introduction of fast-growing tree species in areas with arenized degraded soils can be an alternative to minimize this problem. This research was conducted to study the dominant height growth of Pinus elliottii Engelm. and Pinus taeda L. in relation of arenized soil and degraded by antropic action in the western state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Brazil. For this purpose, we selected dominant trees in stands with 29 years old, in areas with two levels of degradation, which were felled and sectioned by Smalian method to obtain wood sample for dendrochronological analysis and determination of dominant height for age in the period 1982-2010. The dominant height growth of these species, when compared by level of soil degradation, showed different trend of development in the time, indicating the presence of polymorphism curves.
