INTRODUCTION Osteoarthritis (OA) affects the articular cartilage and subchondral bone, compromising the joint as a whole. The knee joint is characterized as one of the main sites of involvement of OA and the most significant risk factors for developing the disease are aging, overweight and female gender. OA is considered one of the most frequent causes of disability, which may affect the quality of life of the patients, favoring the onset of mental disorders. OBJECTIVE To investigate whether anxiety and depression symptoms are more significant in women with OA, when compared with women without this diagnosis, and to what extent this rheumatic disease affects the quality of life of these patients. METHODS The study included 75 women, mean age 67 years; 40 were diagnosed with knee OA and 35 without this diagnosis. The following instruments were used: State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and SF-36, a quality of life questionnaire. RESULTS Women with knee OA have higher rates of depression and anxiety when compared to controls; in addition, they have a lower quality of life. CONCLUSION We believe that the treatment of patients with OA should consider the combination of pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, counseling and family support, in order to achieve a better quality of life.

The aim of the present study was to comparatively evaluate genomic damage (micronucleus) and cellular death (pyknosis, karyolysis, and karyorrhexis) in exfoliated oral mucosa cells from crack cocaine users by micronucleus test. A total of 30 crack cocaine users and 30 health controls (non-exposed individuals) were included in this setting. Individuals had epithelial cells from cheek mechanically exfoliated, placed in fixative, and dropped in clean slides, which were checked for the above nuclear phenotypes. The results pointed out significant statistical differences (p < 0.05) of micronucleated oral mucosa cells from crack cocaine users. Exposure to crack cocaine caused an increase of other nuclear alterations closely related to cytotoxicity such as karyolysis in oral cells as well. In summary, these data indicate that crack cocaine is able to induce chromosomal breakage and cellular death in oral mucosa cells of users.

Angélica da Silva Lantyer; Milena de Barros Viana; Ricardo da Costa Padovani

Biofeedback training has been utilized for the treatment of different pathological conditions, in particular those related to stress/anxiety. This study reviews the scientific literature from 2008 to 2012 about the subject “biofeedback, stress and anxiety”, published in MEDLINE, LILACS and Web of Sciences, using as keywords “biofeedback”, “anxiety”, “stress”, “psychology” and “biofeedback training”. The results obtained showed that biofeedback training has been successfully employed as a therapeutic tool for the management of stress/anxiety in the different populations studied. Nevertheless, all of the studies found were performed outside Brazil, which suggests that biofeedback as a therapeutic tool has not been utilized in the country for some reason that deserves to be better investigated.

Ricardo da Costa Padovani; Lúcia Cavalcanti de Albuquerque Williams

Parental style in families of origin and anxiety among batterers. The present study was aimed at investigating male batterers’ family of origin’s parental style, and its relationship with anxiety symptoms in such men, by comparing these variables with men without a history of domestic violence with similar age, socio-economic status, education and marital status. A sample of 20 batterers and 20 men without a violence history was utilized. The instruments in Portuguese included: a Batterer’s Family of Origin Semi-Structured Interview, The Parental Style Inventory, and the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). Both groups did not differ statistically in regards to age, socio-economic status, education and marital status. However, the groups were statistically different in terms of the variables family of origin’s parental style and anxiety. It is suggested that anxiety, combined with family of origin’s inappropriate parenting, may contribute to intimate partner violence. Future studies could further investigate this possibility using larger samples.
