Single-Item Self-Esteem Scale: Brazilian Adaptation and Relationship with Personality and Prosocial Behavior

Carlos Eduardo Pimentel; Flávia Marcelly de Sousa Mendes da Silva; Jérssia Laís Fonsêca dos Santos; Karen Guedes Oliveira; Nájila Bianca Campos Freitas; Ricardo Neves Couto; Tátila Rayane de Sampaio Brito

The objective of this correlational study was to test the psychometric properties of convergent validity of the Single-Item SelfEsteem Scale (SISES). The correlation between the SISES and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSE), which also measures self-esteem, and with scales that measure other variables (personality and prosocial behaviors) was also tested. A total of 203 students, aged 18 to 58 years (M=23.49, SD= 5.84), from public and private universities in the city of João Pessoa, participated in the study. The Pro-Socialness Scale (PSS), the Ten-Item Personality Inventory (TIPI), the SISES, the RSE, and a demographic questionnaire were used. The results showed that the Portuguese version of the SISES presents satisfactory validity. Therefore, as this study shows a correlation between self-esteem and personality traits and socio-demographic variables, it contributes to the scientific literature in this field and provides an alternative for measuring self-esteem.

The objective of these two studies was to gather evidence of the validity and precision of the Scale of Problematic Internet Use. In Study 01, 240 university students, with an average age of 22.96 years (SD = 3.45), answered scale and sociodemographic questions. The results of an exploratory factor analysis indicated a one-dimensional structure, explaining 49.01% of the total variance and comprising eight items, with a Cronbachs alpha of .84. In Study 02, 235 university students, with an average age of 23.95 years (SD = 6.67), responded to the same instruments. Using confirmatory factor analysis, the structure can be confirmed and presents excellent fit indicators: CFI = .99, TLI = .99, RMSEA = .03 (90% CI = .00-.07) and Pclose = .72, in addition to a Cronbachs alpha of .82. It was concluded that the instrument presents evidence of validity and precision and can be used to gauge the problematic use of the Internet and investigate its relationships to the study population portuguesResumo: Objetivou-se, por meio de dois estudos, reunir evidencias de validade e precisao da Escala de Uso Problematico da Internet. The fear of being single can lead to changes in the quality of life of individuals, which may affect their well-being and self-esteem. This research aimed to validate the Fear of Being Single Scale (FBSS) for Brazil, presenting evidence of its psychometric quality through two studies. Study 1 had 172 participants (Age M = 23.69, SD = 7.77; 64.5% women) and replicated the one-factor structure of the instrument, with six items. Study 2 had 220 participants (Age M = 21.90, SD = 5.64; 59.5% women) and confi rmed the structure using a CFA, with satisfactory indices (CFI = .96; TLI = .94), and provided evidence for the factorial invariance of the instrument, in relation to participants’ relationship status. Additionally, convergent validity was presented through signifi cant correlations with loneliness and life satisfaction scores, and a difference was also observed between men and women regarding the fear of being single. Finally, the scale showed adequate levels of reliability (Cronbach’s alpha, α = 0.88) and composite reliability (CR = 0.82). In conclusion, the scale presented satisfactory evidence for its use in a Brazilian context.

Emerson Diógenes de Medeiros; Ricardo Neves Couto; Patrícia Nunes da Fonsêca; Paulo Gregório Nascimento da Silva; Paloma Cavalcante Bezerra de Medeiros

This study aimed to verify the psychometric parameters of the Posttraumatic Growth Inventory PTGI, presenting evidence of factorial validity, internal consistency and steps of cross-cultural adaptation. The sample consisted of 205 participants from northeastern Brazilian cities, mostly female (59.03%), aged between 18 and 86 years (M = 29.5, SD = 11.4). Participants answered the PTGI, the Life Stressor Checklist – Revised, and demographic questions. The confirmatory factor analysis observed the penta-factorial model as more suitable for PTGI, being statistically superior to three and one-factor. The internal consistency of its factors (Cronbach’s alpha) ranged from .70 to .86, with general alpha of .92, values considered acceptable. It follows that this measurement, providing evidence of construct validity, can be properly used in research in the context in which it was adapted to, however, we recommend the use of the instrument in more heterogeneous samples and conducting other analyzes, observing its factorial invariance.

Patrícia Nunes da Fonsêca; Bruna de Jesus Lopes; Rosicleia Moreira Palitot; Andrezza Mangueira Estanislau; Ricardo Neves Couto; Gabriel Lins de Holanda Coelho

The present study aimed to know in which measures human values predict school engagement. A total of 338 students, with a mean age of 13.04 (SD = 1.45), were the majority (52.4%) from public schools (53.6%) and the ninth grade (26.3%). These responded to the School Engagement Scale, the Core Values Questionnaire, and demographic questions. SPSS statistical software used to perform descriptive and inferential analyzes. The results indicated that students who prioritize values of sub-functions interactive, normative, supra-personal, existence and achievement are dedicated to the accomplishment of the academic task, unlike those that prioritize the values of the subfunction experimentation. In addition, it verified that the variables schooling level and nature of the school institution influenced in the school engagement. The results show the importance of values in academic environment, showing the need to develop projects that can stimulate them in schools, especially those with a central and social orientation.
