Richard Miskolci

Originated from the American Cultural Studies, Queer Theory has gained a reputation as a critical counterpoint to the sociological studies on sexual minorities and the political identity of the social movements. Based on a creative implementation of post-structuralist philosophy for the understanding of how sexuality shapes the contemporary social order, for more than a decade its affinities and tensions, as related to the social sciences, and particularly to sociology, are in discussion. This article joins the debate, analyzes the similarities and distinctions between those two, and finally presents an overview of the current dialogue, pointing to a possible convergence in the queer project to enable an analysis of normalization.

Richard Miskolci

Networks of desire: the specter of AIDS and the use of digital media in the quest for secret same-sex relations in São Paulo

Richard Miskolci

This article seeks to analyze the emergence of an on-line market for love and sex partners in Sao Paulo, as of 1997, when the internet became commercially available in Brazil. Focusing on the first generation of digital media users, my field research looks at men who entered adolescence or adulthood during the AIDS epidemic. I analyze how the use of digital media has been molded by peoples desire to dissociate themselves from the image that homosexuality acquired during the sex panic. In Brazils largest metropolis, this use of digital media is linked to historical and cultural transformations within the realm of homosexualities, as they move under the aegis of an erotic regime based on the desire for social adjustment.

San Francisco e a nova economia do desejo

Richard Miskolci

This paper presents preliminary reflections about a research conduced during seven months in San Francisco, USA, which is also associated to one developed in Sao Paulo, Brazil, since 2007. It aims to synthetize how the use of sites and apps in the search for love and sexual partners constitutes a technological and comportamental phenomenon associated with deep economic, work and urban transformations. Therefore, it reconstitutes historically these connections and analyses them sociologically in one of the cities where they are more visible. The objective is to bring historical, ethnographic, theoretical and conceptual elements to understand the new socio-technical reality, in which we live, the same that has transformed the sphere of eroticism, of sexuality and of the morality related to them.

O vértice do triângulo: Dom Casmurro e as relações de gênero e sexualidade no fin-de-siècle brasileiro

Richard Miskolci

Based on a Queer theoretical approach, this article explores transformations on gender and sexual relations in Brazilian society at the end of XIX century. This work associates a sociological analysis of the love triangle in the novel Dom Casmurro to a historical reconstitution of the period, as a way to give elements to a non-heteronormative comprehension of Brazilian social history. The focus on Machado de Assis´s most famous work allows exploring the fear and the violent refusal of any transgression of the gender and sexual order. The triangles vertex is always an Other and even if we identify s/he with a character, it is only the symbol of what that time and society rejected as a danger for the current structure of love and power relations.

Richard Miskolci
