Spur Gear Design with an S-shaped Transition Curve Application Using Mathematica and CAD Tools

Saifudin Hafiz Yahaya; Jamaludin Md Ali; Mohd Shukor Salleh

The aim of this paper is to introduce the application of an S-shaped transition curve in designing and generating a spur gear. In engineering field, the spur gear usually designed by using an involute curve where this curve needs to use a tracing point method to obtain a curve while an S-shaped curve can obtain a curve directly. The comparative study between an S-shaped method and direct method in Computer Aided Design (CAD) tool also covered.

A Product Design Using an S-Shaped and C-Shaped Transition Curves

Saifudin Hafiz Yahaya; Jamaludin Md Ali; Muhammad Hafidz Fazli bin Md Fauadi

This paper proposes a design technique using an S-shaped and C-shaped transition curves. A simple algorithm will be proposed in this paper where this algorithm will be based on Habib and Sakai [1]. In order to use this algorithm, a few constraints are considered such as the continuity, control points, curvature, radius etc. In this paper, we will apply this algorithm to design a spur gear tooth and vase in the two and three dimensional. The function involved is Bezier like cubic function with the smoothness is G2 continuity.

Composites manufactured by small and medium industries/entrepreneurs (SMI/E) are conventionally cured in the horizontal position. Hence, the confined space restricts optimum productivity. Besides, SMI/E is unable to allocate high budget for high-end technology such as autoclave and vacuum mechanical oven which limits the development of SMI/E as a result of high capital cost. Through a series of literature review, the review confirmed that there is no similar scientific study has been conducted. Consequently, the review is carried out to facilitate the investigation of the feasibility of a gravity cured glass fiber laminated thermosetting composites via vacuum bagging at angle position from horizontal (0°) to vertical (90°) to enhance the curing space required.

Modeling of a Jig Sampling and its Application in Disc Cutter Tools

Saifudin Hafiz Yahaya; Haeryip Sihombing; Mohd Yuhazri Yaakob; Hazman Hasib

The operations of preparing the deform sample and round bar mainly consist of the calculation of the bars unit weight. The Sampling process is conducted through the two cutting flows such as in line production and disc. The problems are then occurred in the second flow (in disc) in performing the cutting process on a certain length. Modeling of the jig sampling is used to solve this problem and also fully discussed throughout this paper.

The individuals possess unique ways of how they learn. Based on this perspective, each of individuals will approach the general learning experiences in a personal and individualized way related to his/her performance and behavior. This study is to analyze the characteristics of product design using Kansei Engineering approach towards the student learning style based on Felder and Solomans theory. Using the 8 (eight) spectacles designs proposed comparing the emotional feeling towards design of product, the study involved 100 students who are using spectacles as the respondents. Focusing on the perception and input dimensions of the Felder-Soloman learning styles comprised in 22 questions and the Crane cognitive alert styles in 9 questions, the result of study shows that the students who are using spectacles are dominated by “the visual” type of Felder-Soloman learning styles. In addition, based on the using of Kansei Engineering, this study also found that the respondents tend to interpret the rimless design of spectacles as “fragile,” “unattractive,” “old-fashion” product, while the design with thicker frame as “durable,” “attractive,” cool,” “ergonomic” product. In this study, there are also the significant correlations proved against the preferences of product design based on quality affective (Kansei Engineering) using learning styles and cognitive alert styles.

Utilization of high tech engineering materials such as composites has been extensively applied in the industries of civil, mechanical and aerospace due to their favourable characteristic such as high stiffness to weight ratio, improve corrosion and environmental resistance and potential reduction of processing. This research is carried out to study the feasibility of laminated composite after cured at different angle due to gravity effects to enhance the curing space required. Vertically cured laminate having similar or improved properties with common horizontally cured laminate to save much space bringing huge advantage especially to the developing Small and Medium Industries / Entrepreneurs (SMI/E). The horizontal cured laminate composite no doubt will fill up the spaces which SMI/E lacks of. Polyester and E-type fiber glass were the main raw materials used in the research via vacuum bagging technique to drain out the excess resin applied as well as minimize the void or air in the laminated composite. The laminated composite fabricated is cured at different curing angle positions in room temperature for 24 hours under the gravity effects. Five samples were prepared according to the ASTM standard to undergo hardness test. From the testing, SN6 which cured at 75˚ had the closest hardness to the horizontal cured control sample.

Moisture absorption is a very important factor in polymers and composite materials used for hull manufacture and stability in marine environment. High water absorption of the material will affects the mechanical properties and stability in composite. This research is carried out to study the feasibility of the gravity effects on curing position of the laminated composite structures to enhance the curing space needed. Vertical cured laminate having almost similar properties with common horizontal cured laminate able to save much space in composite industry. Horizontal cured laminates filled up spaces in which SMI lack of. Polyesters and E-glass fibers were used as the raw material in this research. Vacuum bagging technique was used to suck out the excess resin during lay-up to avoid any voids and air inside laminate and cured at different angle position in room temperature for 24 hours. Seven samples of laminated composite were fabricated and cut into specific dimension in accordance to ASTM standard. This paper will discuss about the investigation on the water absorption and thickness swelling of the thermosetting laminated composite by curing the laminate at different angle using vacuum bagging technique. From the testing, SN6 and SN7 shows to have good water resistant in physical properties.
