Abstract – The objective of this work was to evaluate the blood, liver and rumen parameters, as well as to characterize and quantify the population of ciliated protozoa in the rumen of sheep fed diets with detoxified castor bean meal (DCBM). Thirty‑two lambs were used, for the evaluation of blood and liver parameters, and four rumen‑cannulated adult sheep were used to determine rumen parameters. The control diet was composed by buffel grass hay, ground corn grain, urea and soybean meal (SBM). In the treatments, SBM was partially replaced by DCBM at 15, 30 and 45% in the concentrate. There was no significant difference, among treatments, for the serum‑urea contents whose mean value was 666.0 -mg L1. There was no significant difference, among diets, for glucose, aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase, which had mean values of 690.3 -mg L1, 127.4 IUL -1 and 16.9 IUL -1 , respectively. The ammoniacal nitrogen and pH values had an increasing linear pattern with the replacement of SBM by DCBM. The genus

Use of concentrate for lambs grazing buffel grass may improve animal performance and animal traits. The objective of the present trial was to evaluate the final body weight, average daily gain, total weight gain and carcass traits (cold and hot carcass weights, cold and hot dressing percentages) of lambs grazing buffel grass and receiving different concentrate levels (0; 0.33; 0.66 and 1.0% of dry matter in relation to body weight). Forty lambs were used, ten animals by treatment, with 16.5 ± 2.0 kg of initial body weight, distributed in four groups. Experimental design was a completely randomized with ten replicates. Concentrate levels did not influence the final body weight, the average daily gain, total weight gain and cold and hot carcass weights. However, the increase of concentrate levels promoted higher cold and hot carcass yields.

The use of concentrate for sheep grazing Buffel grass may improve the productive performance and carcass traits of animals. The objective of present trial was to evaluate the productive performance and carcass traits of sheep grazing Buffel grass receiving different concentrate levels. The concentrate levels used were: 0; 0.33; 0.66 and 1.0% of dry matter in relation to body weight. Forty lambs were used, ten animals by treatments, with 16.5 ± 2.0 kg of initial body weight and 20.97 kg final body weight, distributed in four groups. The experimental design was a completely randomized with ten replicates by treatments. The concentrate levels did not influence the cold and hot carcass weight. However, the increasing levels of concentrate promoted higher cold and hot carcass yield. Blood, head, hide, heart, lung, kidney and liver (non carcass components) weights and proportion of slaughtered body weight (SBW) and leg, shoulder, brisket, rib, neck and loin weights (commercial meat cuts) were not affected by increasing levels of concentrate. Full intestine in proportion of SBW was lower with the increase of concentrate levels, while the briskets weight was higher with increase of concentrate.

The objective of this present experiment was to determine intake and apparent digestibility of dry matter and nutrients, nitrogen (NB) and water balances (WB) of sheep fed with buffel grass silages. The buffel grass cultivars used were Tanzania, Buchuma and Biloela. 21 male, castrated, crossbred Santa Ines x Non defined genotype sheep, with initial body weight of 31.8±3.16kg were used, kept in metabolic cages. The experimental design was completely randomized with seven replicates. No differences were observed in dry matter intake in g/day (919.2) and % of body weight (2.9). In general, digestibility coefficients of dry matter varied from 37.7% to 60.0%. The NB and WB were positive, with higher NB values in sheep fed with Tanzania (5.1g/day) and Biloela (3.9g/day) and higher WB in animals fed with Buchuma (1.38kg/animal/day) and Biloela (1.42kg/animal/day). All cultivars of buffel grass evaluated (Tanzania, Buchuma and Biloela) presented adequate chemical composition, where the silage of buffel grass used corresponded to 60% of the total daily water intake by sheep.

This study evaluated the apparent digestibility coefficient of dry matter, crude protein and digestible energy (Kcal kg-1) for six ingredients (cassava chips, sorghum grain, atriplex hay, gliricidia hay, leucaena hay and wine residues) available in Brazilian semi-arid for pink tilapia feed. The feed were stained with 0.1% of chromic oxide III. A total of six circular tanks containing 1000 liters of volume were used. In each one was placed a circular cage of plastic screen with 20 fish each (initial weight of 80g). The fish were hand fed daily 3 times a day. To collect feces each cage was placed in the evening in conical 250L fiberglass tanks. Apparent digestibility of the ingredients tested was calculated based on the content of chromic oxide III in the samples offered and in the feces by atomic absorption spectrophotometry to the nutrient feed and feces, according to standard procedure. Among ingredients evaluated the best CDA values for MS were to cassava chips and sorghum. The best CDA values for CP were to cassava chips, sorghum and gliricidia hay. Atriplex hay was the ingredient with better digestible energy value.

The objective of this present trial was to evaluate the forage intake, productive performance of lambs (average daily gain, total weight gain and final body weight), the carcass characteristics (hot carcass weight and hot carcass dressing), besides stocking rate and weight gain by area of buffel grass pastures (Cenchrus ciliaris L.) grazing by lambs. This trial was carried out during September 2009 to Ausgust 2010, using continuos stocking. The treatments were combinations of two cultivars of buffel grass (Biloela and Cpatsa 7754) and three forage allowance (4, 8 and 12 kg of dry matter/100 kg of body weight or 4, 8 and 12%) in 3 x 2 factorial arrangement and completely randomized blocks with three replicates. The variables related to forage intake, produtive performance, carcass characteristics, stocking rate and weight gain by area did not affect by cultivars, forage allowance and interation between cultivars and forage allowance. The lambs presented 452,14 g/animal/day of dry matter intake, 59,77 g/animal/day of average daily gain, 41,51 % of hot carcass dressing, while buffel grass pastures had 11,78 lambs/ha and promoted 205,64 kg/ha/year of weight gain.

This study aimed to evaluate the return of post partum ovarian activity in dairy goats supplemented with different levels of energy during the dry period in the semi-arid region of Pernambuco. Twenty-four animals were allocated into four treatments of six animals each: Control, consisting of goats that had access to pasture and only received 4 kg of fresh palm, and three groups with isoproteic supplementation (20% Crude Protein), ranging in TDN content of 65%, 75% and 85%. The daily milk yield showed a linear growth behavior (P 0.05). We concluded that the supplementation with different levels of energy promoted a positive effect, as increased productive parameters and reduced the number of days for the reestablishment of the reproductive parameters postpartum; for instance, uterine involution, return to estrus and consequently return of ovarian activity postpartum.
