Synthesis of Optically Pure Terminal Epoxide and 1,2‐Diol via Hydrolytic Kinetic Resolution Catalyzed by New Heterometallic Salen Complexes

Abstract The inactive chiral (salen)Co complex is easily activated by InCl3 and TlCl3 Lewis acids by forming heterometallic salen complexes. These complexes show very high catalytic activity for the synthesis of enantiomerically enriched terminal epoxides (>99% ee) and 1,2‐diols simultaneously via hydrolytic kinetic resolution. Strong synergistic effects of different Lewis acids, Co‐In and Co‐Tl, were exhibited in the catalytic process. The system described is very simple and efficient.

Asymmetric Ring Opening of Some Terminal Epoxides Catalyzed by Dimeric Type Novel Chiral Co(Salen) Complexes

Santosh Singh Thakur; Wenji Li; Seong-Jin Kim; Geon-Joong Kim

The asymmetric ring opening (ARO) of racemic terminal epoxides with H 2 O via hydrolytic kinetic resolution provides an efficient synthetic route to prepare optically pure terminal epoxides. The dimeric type chiral Co(salen)AlX 3 complex has great potential to catalyze HKR of terminal epoxides in a highly reactive and enantioselective manner in comparison to their monomeric analogy.
