Object-oriented database systems (OODBS), which aim at meeting the data modeling, performance, cooperative design, and version management requirements of next-generation applications, such as CAD, CAM, CASE, hypermedia, and expert systems, are discussed. Key features of OODBS are presented, a taxonomy of approaches is provided, and architectural and implementation issues, design alternatives, and tradeoffs are examined. A variety of OODB systems, both research prototypes and commercial systems, are summarized. Industry efforts to accelerate a consensus that can lead to standards in the OODB are discussed. >

Abstract Parallel signature analyzers (PSAs) implemented as multiple input linear feedback shift registers are very useful in compressing test response data in digital circuits. In this paper, some analytical results on error detection using a class of PSAs are presented. The concept of monitoring the most significant bit of a PSA is introduced. Finally, a PASCAL simulator, called SIGLYZER, to study the effectiveness of PSAs in detecting errors in test response data, is described. The use of the SIGLYZER as a design tool is also explained.

On 30 August 1990, Texas Instruments Incorporated, Dallas, TX was awarded a three year contract (Contract No. DAAB07-90-C-B920) to develop a modular and open object-oriented database system. The contract is funded by DARPA/ISTO and is being managed by the U.S. Army, CECOM, Fort Monmouth, N.J. The contract is being executed at TIs Information Technologies Laboratory, Computer Science Center, Dallas, Texas. So far, we have received an outstanding response from interested parties (database research community, OODB application developers, OODB builders) to our contract award announcement. This communication is a collection of most commonly asked questions and answers to them.

Enormous amounts of heterogeneous information have been accumulated within corporations, government organizations and universities. It is becoming increasingly easier to create new information, but the knowledge about the existence, location, and means of retrieval of information, have become so confusing as to give rise to the phenomenon of write-only databases.
