Aging test results for high temperature TRIACs during power cycling

Sebastien Jacques; Nathalie Batut; Rene Leroy; Laurent Gonthier

This paper deals with the functional reliability study of a new 16 A - 600 V high-temperature TRIAC family, subjected to power cycles, simulating the component in harsh real operation conditions. The targeted application is a vacuum cleaner (1800 W - 230 V - 50 Hz). In this kind of application, one of the major issues for TRIAC, which leads to high mechanical stresses for the assembly, occurs when the switch turns-on in ldquojammed nozzle operationrdquo, i.e. when the tube is blocked. In that case, the TRIAC junction temperature reaches at most 180degC, higher than the maximum value specified by the manufacturer (i.e. 150degC). The aim of this study is to evaluate the TRIACs lifetime under these operation conditions. The thermal stresses generate local temperature variations and then, some mechanical stresses (assembly degradation). For TRIACs, the junction-to-case thermal resistance (Rth(j-c)) increase is the signature of such a damage. The lifetime has been studied and fitted with a Lognormale distribution. The components damages, due to the mechanical stresses, have been explained thanks to some qualitative two-dimensional thermo-mechanical simulations using finite elements (ANSYSreg).

Thermal runaway evaluation for high temperature TRIACS

Sebastien Jacques; Laurent Gonthier; Nathalie Batut

This paper deals with thermal runaway that could occur for the new high-temperature TRIACs which are used with junction temperatures up to 160degC in transient state. The conditions to avoid thermal runaway for the specific case of alternative voltage are discussed. Experimental measurements are given and compared with a theoretical analysis.

Impact of aluminum wire and ribbon bonding technologies on D 2 PAK package reliability during thermal cycling applications

Sebastien Jacques; Rene Leroy; Marc Lethiecq

Abstract This paper highlights the impact of bonding techniques (Al wire and Al ribbon) on the aging of Schottky diodes, assembled in D2PAK package, subjected to temperature cycling. The experimental test results coupled with failure analyses exhibit a better robustness and a lifetime about 2.3 times higher for the ribbon bonding assembly. A higher contact surface, the low loop profile and stiffness of ribbons allow slowing down crack initiation and propagation between the Al bond and Al metallization on the top of the silicon die.

Development and characterization of a new low-loss monolithic AC switch based on super-gain BJT

Nathalie Batut; Ambroise Schellmanns; Sebastien Jacques; Zheng Ren; Luong Viêt Phung; F. Ihuel

This article deals with the development of an innovative low-loss monolithic AC switch based on super-gain BJT manufactured on silicon substrate. The GREMAN laboratory has started this study for ten years. Two main categories of AC switch are described: hybrid AC switch (based on the discrete association of 2 super-gain BJTs) and monolithic AC switch. The key criteria to design and process the monolithic power device are particularly discussed taking into consideration its application areas and its manufacturability.

Improved Power Quality in an Innovative Bidirectional Inverter Topology

The management of electricity consumption still represents a major issue, and particularly in individual housing mainly to find a good balance between production and consumption. Attention must be focused on the optimization of the cost of electricity consumption and, at the same time, the peak demand. Regarding a smart home management system, the inverter has a central role. Voltage and current bidirectional features are of utmost importance, specifically when an energy transfer is required from a storage system and the AC-grid, and vice versa. This article deals with an innovative bidirectional inverter topology based on sinusoidal waveforms from the generation of sine half-waves. The main challenges are both to improve the power quality of the output signals in terms of total harmonic distortion (THD), and minimize the complexity of the whole converter. Wide band-gap semiconductor devices (SiC MOSFETs) are used to optimize the efficiency of the DC-AC converter while minimizing its size and its weight. Many experimental measurements with low output power (lower than 1 kW) point out the relevance of this kind of topology.

A Relevant Fuzzy Logic Algorithm to Better Optimize Electricity Consumption in

Sébastien Bissey; Sebastien Jacques; J.C. Le Bunetel

In this article, a Fuzzy Logic algorithm (MATLAB environment) is descripted to better predict and manage electricity consumption in individual housing. Several measurements were performed in 3 houses to have an idea of typical electrical energy consumptions. Without any prediction model, the simulation results of the management system exhibit that it is not possible to smooth all peak demands. In particular, this smoothing is in chronological sequence. Using the prediction and management modeling, the highest peak demands can be forecasted. As a consequence, if the house is composed of a storage system, all stored electricity can be reinjected during the highest peak periods. Finally, the system proposed here provides safety guarantees, and particularly during AC-line disconnection.
