BACKGROUND Endoscopy is a frequently applied operation in health institutions which may cause anxiety in patients. OBJECTIVE The objective of this study is to determine the effects of written educational material related to the endoscopy procedure on the anxiety level of the patient before gastrointestinal endoscopy. DESIGN A randomised controlled trial design with two groups: case and control groups. PARTICIPANTS 140 patients assigned randomly who applied for gastrointestinal endoscopy. METHODS INTERVENTION the control group in our study consisted of 70 people who were briefly informed by the relevant unit about pre-endoscopy preparation. The case group consisted of 70 people who were also given brief information about the pre-endoscopy preparation by the relevant unit. Only the case group were also given written educational material and told orally by the researcher about the content. MEASUREMENTS for the collection of the data, a questionnaire form and Spielbergers State-Trait Anxiety Inventory were used. RESULTS A significant difference in the average state anxiety scores was found between the case and the control group (p<0.05). An important difference was found in the average state anxiety scores between the case and the control group who had not undergone endoscopy before our study (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS Use of written material including detailed information to inform the patient before endoscopy was useful in lessening their anxiety level. Health professionals should evaluate the anxiety level of patients before endoscopy and educational material should be given to them to read.

BackgroundThis study aimed to identify the resilience and burnout status of nurses working in the field of oncology.MethodsThis descriptive study was conducted with 140 oncology nurses. The data were collected using a socio-demographic attributes form, Resilience Scale for Adults, and the Maslach’s Burnout Inventory. Percentage ratios, mean and median values, Kruskal–Wallis test, Mann–Whitney U test, correlation analysis, and multiple stepwise linear regression analysis were used to evaluate the data.ResultsThe Maslach’s Burnout Inventory total median score was 49.00. The emotional exhaustion median score was 24.00, the depersonalization median score was 9.00, and the personal accomplishment median score was 16.00. The Resilience Scale for Adults total median score was 134.00. The median resilience subscale scores, such as structural style, perception of future, family cohesion, self-perception, social competence, and social resources, were 16.00, 16.00, 24.00, 25, 23, and 31, respectively. A relationship existed between emotional exhaustion and perception of future; depersonalization and structured style and self-perception; and personal accomplishment and structured style, perception of future, and self-perception. Multiple stepwise linear regression analysis revealed a significant relationship between the number of years in the field and emotional exhaustion and depersonalization scores. Moreover, a significant relationship between structured style variables and personal accomplishment scores was observed.ConclusionsThis study demonstrated the relationship between burnout and resilience situations among the oncology nurses. The results can be used to plan individual and organizational interventions to increase resilience and reduce the experience of burnout by developing measures such as improving communication skills, providing education on stress management and coping strategies, using social resources, and organizing programs that provide psychological support.

Hemangiomas are the most common tumors of infancy. Most of them require no treatment, but treatment is needed if dramatic aesthetic, and/or functional impairment as visual or airway obstruction or ulceration arises. We reported a 6-month-old infant presented with a 6-week history of a rapidly growing cutaneus hemangioma on the right eyelid and caused visual impairment. The patient was successfully treated with the use of oral propranolol therapy. We suggest that propranolol can be considered as a first line treatment in a patient with infantil hemangioma. Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine levator palpebralis superior muscle histologically in patients with congenital blepharoptosis and to investigate the relationship between these findings and age, sex and degree of blefaroptosis in this patient group. Materials and methods: Levator muscle of 13 patients with congenital ptosis, who had applied to Dicle University Medical Faculty Ophthalmology Clinic and had undergone levator palpebralis superior muscle resection between january 2009-january 2010, has been examined histopathologically in Histology and Embriology Deparment. During preoperative period, ptosis amount, levator function (LF), tear functions, Bell\s phenomenon and jaw-winking phenomenon were evaluated. All patients underwent resection of levator palpebralis superior muscle. Received postoperative levator muscle was examined by light microscopy. Results: The average age of 9 (69.2%) male and 4 (30.8%) female cases were 10.61 p 4.77 (4- 19) years. In histological examination, the quality and quantity of the levator muscle fibrils have been assessed. There was no relationship detected between histological features of levator palpebralis superior muscle and patient\s age and gender (p>0.05). Patients with weak levator palpebralis superior muscle were detected to have fatty degeneration histologically. The higher the levator palpebralis superior muscle function revealed decreased fatty degeneration and increased skeletal muscle fibrils. Conclusion: More ultrastructural studies in larger populations are needed to support the relationship between structure and function of levator palpebralis superior muscle in patients with congenital blepharoptosis.Amac: Lateral epikondilit (tenisci dirsegi) en fazla tani konulan dirsek yan agri nedenidir.
