Conjunctival Squamous Cell Carcinoma, A Rare Entity: Case Report of 2 Cases

Nishtha Saini; Sonia Hasija; Manpreet Kaur Gill; Shivani Kalhan; Satya Dutta

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) conjunctiva is a rare cancer of the ocular surface with an incidence rate of 0.02 per 100,000 in high latitude areas to 3.5 per 100,000 at low latitudes near the Equator. This positive correlation between this SCC incidence and latitude indicates that exposure to ultraviolet radiation may play a role its etiology. The disease is more common in elderly and male patients, but may develop at a younger age, especially in association with xeroderma pigmentosum or immunodeficiency. Isolated squamous cell carcinoma of cornea is rare with few case reports. Here, we report two cases of conjunctival SCC, both in elderly males who presented with whitish painless mass encroaching the cornea. This mass was excised in both the patients. Histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of SCC conjunctiva.IOFF

Granular cell tumor: A rare tumor at rare location

Sonia Hasija; Shilpa Bairwa; Shilpa Garg; Shivani Kalhan; Shilpa Tomar; Satya Dutta

Granular cell tumor (GCT) is a rare tumor affecting the middle-aged people with an incidence of 0.017–0.029%. In 1926, Abrikossoff was the first to describe this tumor as myoblastoma as it was arising from muscle in the tongue. Common sites are the tongue, skin, and subcutaneous tissue. Here in, a 29-year-old female presented with a swelling on the ring finger of the right hand. Excision biopsy was performed. Histological features were suggestive of GCT. This case is of particular interest due to the atypical location and clinical presentation.

Tuberculous (TB) pericarditis, caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, is found in approximately 1% of all autopsied cases of TB and in 1-2% of pulmonary TB [1]. Although there has been a significant decline in TB in developed countries over last decades, Asia, Africa and Latin America, with 86% of the World’s population are home to 95% of all cases of active TB and 98% of the nearly 2 million deaths resulting from TB each year [2]. Pericardial involvement by TB was initially described by Rokitansky in 1852, and it was he who noted the “association with, and dependence upon,” an earlier TB lesion [3]. TB pericarditis has a variable clinical presentation and should be considered in the evaluation of all cases of pericarditis without a rapidly self-limited course [4]. TB pericarditis by no means always progresses to the constrictive fibrous stage [3]. In some parts of the world, a TB cause of constrictive pericarditis is more common than a non TB cause [5]. Recent reviews on the diagnosis and management of pericardial disease have paid scant attention to TB pericarditis, which is arguably the leading cause of pericarditis in the world [6,7]. TB pericarditis in an 82-year-old female diagnosed on autopsy is presented herewith.

Malignant Brenner tumor of ovary: A rare entity

Ashok Sangwaiya; Shilpa Garg; Shivani Kalhan; Rahul N Satarkar; Pawan Singh; Manmeet Kaur Gill

Worldwide, ovarian carcinoma continues to be responsible for more deaths than all other gynecologic malignancies. It usually occurs in older women and the average age at presentation is 50 years. Brenner tumor of the ovary is very rare, mostly benign, small, and unilateral. Malignant Brenner tumor is much rarer. These tumors are believed to arise from urothelial metaplasia of ovarian surface epithelium. Malignant Brenner tumor of ovary closely resembles the transitional cell carcinoma of ovary. They must be differentiated because the latter has a worse prognosis. A case of unilateral malignant Brenner tumor in a postmenopausal woman is reported here and its features are briefly discussed.
