DEA nonradial efficiency based on vector properties

Silvio Figueiredo Gomes Júnior; João Carlos Correia Baptista Soares de Mello; Lidia Angulo Meza

Classic data envelopment analysis (DEA) models determine the efficiency of productive units, called decision making units (DMUs). DEA uses as its methodology the equiproportional reduction of inputs or increase of outputs and the finding of a single target for each DMU. This target does not incorporate the preference of the decision maker. Later works propose obtaining alternative targets based on nonradial projections on the efficiency frontier that are obtained through nonproportional variations of inputs or outputs. However, the efficiencies are not calculated for these alternative targets. This impedes a comparison among the DMUs. Thus, diverse nonradial efficiency indexes have been proposed based on mathematical averages or weighted averages that do not consider the vectorial characteristics of the efficiency. In this work, we present a nonradial efficiency index based on the initial concept of efficiency associated with each alternative (nonradial) target obtained through a multiobjective model of an inefficient DMU.

This paper evaluates the operational performance of airlines using an alternative data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach. We start by calculating the relative efficiency of each firm with the classical DEA. After identifying the set of efficient airlines that could be used as benchmarks for the inefficient firms, we employ a nonradial efficiency measure based on vector concepts that considers each efficient airline as a real target at once. This allows the assessment of efficiency scores using other targets than those automatically derived by the classical DEA, traditionally built on radial measures of efficiency. Although the results indicate a large number of negative efficiency scores, for most inefficient airlines, it was possible to identify at least one real target whose corresponding score was positive. In addition, the methodology herein adopted enriches benchmarking analysis, as it provides a set of alternative targets easily understood and accepted by the managers involved in the decision process.

This article discusses alternatives to the use and management of land in planting tomatoes in San Jose de Uba, a city in Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil, in order to promote sustainable agriculture in the region, emphasizing the economic, environmental and cultural aspects of the problem. The cultural prospect increases the complexity of the issue, requiring the use of a methodology capable of dealing with all the subjectivity involved in the decision making process. The study aims to contribute to the achievement of sustainable development in the region, starting with a decision-making process based on the views of the farmer, respecting the cultural aspect of the problem. The characteristics of the decision-making environment indicated the use of a combination of multicriteria decision support methods - MACBETH and VIP Analysis - for selecting the best alternative capable of meeting the proposed objectives

Utilização do método ELECTRE II para avaliação de pilotos no campeonato de Fórmula 1

Choosing a Formula One driver is a difficult task, which goes beyond the identification of ability and courage to drive cars. Drivers that do not fight for the first places in competitions normally gain little coverage because sports broadcasts favor the winners. The search for good drivers is especially important for smaller teams that are unable to pay high salaries. Hiring a good driver may represent significant earnings, allowing for a better team performance in the championship. This article proposes a methodology to evaluate these drivers in the F1 championship using the ELECTRE II decision support method. The main goal is to offer hiring options for the small/medium teams, allowing them to be more competitive in the following season. The analysis was made considering the pilots of the 2007 season.

Seleção de uma aeronave para atividades de charter regional com utilização do método multicritério de borda modificado com utilização de mediana

This article tries to solve a problem of selecting an airship for an airline company whose core business is regional charter flights. The company belongs to an economic group whose main activity is logistics. The decision problem that the company faces has eight alternatives to be accessed according to eleven criteria. For approaching the problem a novel multicriteria decision aiding method is used. This new method is one variant of the classical Borda method denoted by Modified or Median-based Borda Method. Using this new method is justified by the fact that it is less influenced by the irrelevant alternatives as well as by its easy of understanding and its low computational complexity. The thus Modified Borda Method provided for consistent results and thus led to a reliable decision support.

Condorcet Method with Weakly Rational Decision Makers: A Case Study in the Formula 1 Constructors’ Championship☆

João Carlos Correia Baptista Soares de Mello; Silvio Figueiredo Gomes Júnior; Lidia Angulo-Meza; Catarina Loureiro de Oliveira Mourão

Abstract The ordinal methods are widely used to establish rankings in sports competitions because sporting results are on an ordinal scale. However, these methods assume that the decision maker is highly rational and provide a full ranking. This paper analyses the case in which the decision maker is weakly rational. In this case, the decision maker respects the transitivity of preferences but not indifference. It also shows how to adapt the Condorcet method to deal with this situation, using the results of the 2013 Formula 1 Constructors’ World Championship.

In recent years, many academic papers have been developed to verify the advantage in sports competitions play in their own fields (Home Advantage). Many of these works use statistical tools to assess the occurrence of Home Advantage and its causes. This article proposes the application of a multicriteria methodology to assess the occurrence of Home Advantage in the Pan American Games, analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of this method compared to commonly used. The work focuses in particular the Dominican Republic and Argentina delegations performance along the Pan American Games history. The results indicate the advantage of the countries analyzed in hosting competitions.
