In order to evaluate tissue repair after the use of castor oil polymer implant additioned with 40% sodium carbonate, isolated or associated to autogenous bone marrow in heterotopic site and in experimental bone gaps in radii of rabbits, 30 White New Zealand rabbits were submitted to bilateral radial ostectomy. In 15 rabbits the bone gap of the right side was filled with polymer cylinders (group P) of similar size of the gaps; the remaining rabbits received autogenous bone marrow with the implant (group M). The bone defects of the left limb did not receive any treatment and served as control. Six rabbits received 6 implants in the Rectus abdominus muscle (heterotopic site) and in three of these rabbits the implants was associated with bone marrow. In the radiographic study both groups presented increased radiopacity at the implant site without bone axis deviation or resorption of the receptor bone ends. Group P presented irregular calcification areas at the peripheral region and over the polymer. Group M presented a more intense, regular and precocious radiopacity pattern in relation to group P. In microscopical evaluation there was evidence of immature bone tissue formation tending to organize itself, isolated sprouts of neoformed bone over the polymer and its superficial pores. It was concluded that implant allows osteogenenesis and osteoconduction in bone gaps, and bone formation was progressive, especially when additioned bone marrow aspirate; there was capillary, perivascular tissue and osteoprogenitor cells migrating into the pores; with fibrovascular tissue permeating implant surface; implants incorporation was slowly and was found incomplete until 9 weeks; the implant was able to induce foreign body reaction without toxic or secondary reactions to its presence. In heterotopic and orthotopic sites, the implant was not able to induce bone formation, inciting mild foreign-body reaction with giant cells and surrounding fibrous layer.

The fascia lata was used for the intracapsular reconstruction of experimentally ruptured cranial cruciate ligament in dogs. In gross appearence, 90 days after surgery, the autografts were thick in intracapsular portion, presented bigger diameter than the normal ligament, and showed tendon aspect. Microscopicaly, collagen fibers were involved by slack conjunctive fibers, they were more intense in the intracapsular portion, and, later in time, presented an arragement of longitudinally oriented collagen fiber bundles. The elastic fibers were present in small amount, sparse and around the collagen fibers and prevailed in graft extremities.

Estudo macroscópico das aderências peritoneais provocadas experimentalmente em cães

This research was performed in order to study the adhesion formation induced by injury to the peritoneum at the time of surgery. In the present study ischemia by ligation appears to be the most potent adhesiogenic factor. Serosal injury and drying and the lesions cauterized by electric cautery were forms of serosal injury that induced fibrinous or irreversible adhesions. Adhesions were stimulated when drying was combined with rubbing the tissue with dry gauze. The combinant drying with fibrin enhanced the inicial adhesion. Comparing the four factors, serosal injury was posibly the least likely to cause adhesions. In this type of injury the fibrinolitic mechanism was not inhibited.

We evaluated the mechanical properties, strength, strain and stress to the elastic limit, the rupture stress point and stiffness index of fresh menisci and menisci transplanted for 70 days in the knees of rabbits after preservation in glycerin. The first group (treated) was formed by six medial menisci of the left knee, collected from these animals for commercial breeding. These menisci were stored in 98% glycerin for a period of 30-60 days, and then rehydrated in a solution in 0.5% saline enrofloxacin for 12 hours, and implanted in the knees of another six rabbits underwent meniscectomy . After 70 days of surgery was performed the euthanasia of animals and removal of allografts for mechanical evaluation. The second group (control) consisted of six medial menisci, removed from the contralateral knees (right) of the same animals. For the sample studied, had no statistically significant difference between control and treated groups for any of the variables analyzed, showing that the rehydration of meniscal allografts after preservation in glycerin keeps the mechanical characteristics of these, after 70 days of implantation, similar to the meniscus fresh.

Comparação entre o fio de náilon e o fio de aço na imobilização de fraturas patelares induzidas em cães

Ricardo Junqueira Del Carlo; Arnaldo de Andrade Junior; Simone Rezende Galvão

Fourteen female dogs, without a definite breed, were divided into two similar experimental groups, denominated Group I and Group II which were submitted to a comparativo study between a nylon thread and steel thread, respectively, on the immobilization of experimentally patellar fractures in dogs. Dogs of each group were submitted a only surgical procedure. All animals were evaluated during a period of 45 days when the feasibility of the nylon thread on the immobilization of the patellar fractures was observed to be successful in comparison to the steel thread, that even though it is highly recommended on the situations in which the material might be up to a distention and alternated relaxing, for under such conditions, the thread will quickly suffer fatigue, consequently breaking up.
