IMPACT OF DATA WAREHOUSING ON ORGANIZATIONAL PERFORMANCE OF RETAILING FIRMS

Sang M. Lee; Soon-Goo Hong; Pairin Katerattanakul

This study investigates the relationship between the implementation of data warehousing and organizational performance in retailing firms. For this research goal, five hypotheses are developed and tested. The paired T-tests and Hotellings T-square tests are performed on two groups — retailing firms implementing data warehousing and those that do not. The results of analyses show that data warehousing firms achieve better nonfinancial performance, including promotional performance analysis, vendor analysis, customer analysis, and market segmentation analysis, but do not achieve better financial performance, including the year-to-year percent change in sales per employee, return on sales, and year-to-year percent change in sales.

Evaluating Government Website Accessibility: A Comparative Study

Soon-Goo Hong; Pairin Katerattanakul; Seok Jeong Joo

Because of the aging society, web accessibility will become more important, especially for the disabled people. Even though efforts have been made to reduce the informational gap resulting from web inaccessibility, websites from virtually every type of organization have major accessibility problems. This study used an automated software tool to evaluate the accessibility of four Korean government and four US government websites. The web accessibility problems found were manually verified by both human experts and an assistive technology. Results were compared between the Korean and the US government websites and between the websites published in 2004 and 2007. Finally, how much accessibility of the Korean and the US government websites has improved during 2004–2007, common web accessibility problems, and potential errors from the automated software tool are discussed.

Framework for User Perception of Effective E-Tail Web Sites

Sang M. Lee; Pairin Katerattanakul; Soon-Goo Hong

This study presents the development of an empirically validated framework for users’ perception of effective Web sites for retail e-commerce (E-tail). In particular, we attempted to answer the main research questions: What are the major designs determining E-tail Web site effectiveness? How do these designs support Web users’ objectives in using the Web? Based on the concept of “fitness for use†and the reasons that consumers use the Web, we proposed that “effective designs for E-tail Web sites should support Web customers for their (a) information search, (b) pleasure and (c) business transactions.†Then, data were collected from a survey on 427 potential Web customers. An exploratory analysis was conducted to refine the proposed framework and to provide structure of the constructs in the framework to be validated by a following confirmatory analysis. Results suggest that the major designs determining E-tail Web site effectiveness include 16 factors, with 64 Web designs supporting the three major reasons for customers to use the Web.

Evaluating government website accessibility: Software tool vs human experts

Soon-Goo Hong; Pairin Katerattanakul; Dae hyung Lee

Purpose – This study seeks to provide insightful information about web accessibility based on human judgment in one Asian country (i.e. South Korea) in comparison to the USA.Design/methodology/approach – This study applies both the automated software tool and the human review of web content to measure website accessibility.Findings – Overall accessibility errors found from the Korean government websites are approximately two times higher than those from the US government websites. The accessibility errors are found in virtually every non‐text information content group. Finally, results of the manual evaluation conducted by human experts show fewer accessibility errors than those found in the evaluation conducted by the automated software tool.Research limitations/implications – Because of the limited number of the websites evaluated and the automated software tools used in this study, the generalization of its findings may be inappropriate. However, the redundant accessibility errors identified by the aut...

Effect of business characteristics and ERP implementation on business outcomes: An exploratory study of Korean manufacturing firms

Pairin Katerattanakul; James J. Lee; Soon-Goo Hong

Purpose – This study is an exploratory study aiming to explore whether different groups of manufacturing firms with similar business characteristics and enterprise resource planning (ERP) implementation approaches would experience different business outcomes from ERP implementation. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – Cluster analysis with data collected from 256 Korean manufacturing firms was employed to identify groups of manufacturing companies having similar business characteristics and adopting similar ERP implementation approaches. Then, the differences in business outcomes from implementing ERP systems among these groups of companies were examined. Findings – Company size and production approaches are useful variables for grouping manufacturing firms into clusters of companies with similar characteristics. Additionally, large manufacturing firms with make-to-order production approach have significantly higher perceived benefits from implementing ERP systems regardi...

Optimal supply chain formation using agent negotiation in a SET model-based make-to-order

Hyun Soo Kim; Jae Hyung Cho; Hyung Rim Choi; Soon-Goo Hong; Moo Hong Kang

In an effort to composite an optimal supply chain, this study has introduced an agent-based negotiation model as a method for assigning a lot of orders to a large number of participants. As a resources allocation mechanism to form strategic cooperation based on information sharing between supply chain members, this agent negotiation model provides such functions as bidding, scheduling, and coordination, allowing all participants to make a profit, and accomplishing a Pareto-optimum solution from the viewpoint of the whole supply chain. SET model-based scheduling takes into consideration both early (earliness) production costs and late (tardiness) production costs, along with the competitive relationship between multiple participants. This study has tried to prove that the result of an agent-based negotiation is a Pareto optimal solution under a dynamic supply chain environment, establishing the mathematical formulation for a performance test, and making a comparison with the heuristic Branch & Bound method.

The impact of ISP, BPR, and customization on ERP performance in manufacturing SMEs of Korea

Soon-Goo Hong; Keng Siau; Jong-Weon Kim

Purpose This paper aims to assess how enterprise resource planning (ERP) performance of Korean small and medium enterprises in manufacturing differs according to different levels of business process reengineering (BPR), information strategic planning (ISP) and ERP customization. Design/methodology/approach A questionnaire survey was carried out in this research. Responses from 96 small and medium manufacturing companies that have adopted ERP systems were analyzed. Findings The results of this study suggest that ISP and BPR implementation are positively correlated to ERP performance. Originality/value While consulting and customization costs have positive impacts on ERP performance, the level of customization does not influence performance. As one of the pioneering studies that investigate the impact of BPR, ISP and ERP customization on small and medium manufacturing companies, this research contributes to both theory and practice.

Development of a SOA-based Distributed Collaborative Agent in RTE Environments

Hyung-Rim Choi; Hyun-Soo Kim; Soon-Goo Hong; Young-Jae Park; Min-Je Cho; Sungwook Choi; Chang-Hyun Park; Si-Hyeob Kang; Bung-Sun An

The organizations in the competitive business environment are under pressure of handling internal management processes as well as external supply chain issues. In addition, the paradigm of supply chain management (SCM) has been shifted from static to dynamic problems. For the efficient SCM, organizations should be a RTE (Real Time Enterprises) that views entire supply chains as a single entity. In this paper, the agent system that makes RTE and dynamic supply chains possible is developed. Then, the developed agent system is verified in the TAC SCM(Trading Agent Competition Supply Chain Management) experimental environment and a dashboard is also developed for monitoring management activities of supply chains. The contributions of this paper are as followings. First, unlike the previous agent systems, the suggested agent system in this paper provides autonomy and scalability using SOA. Second, this suggested model for dynamic environment can be applied for the development of software supporting a SCM.
