Wireless sensor network based asset tracking service

Sun-Jin Kim; Jung Hae Seo; Jonnalagadda Krishna; Sun-Joong Kim

An asset tracking service based on low power wireless sensor networks is proposed and methods to effectively deploy the service are discussed. Asset tracking enables asset managers to track asset location and to indirectly monitor the asset usage status in real time by using mobile wireless sensor nodes attached to each asset. The suggested solution will reduce costs associated with asset tracking and management and improve asset utilization and operational efficiency. The core asset tracking technology can be applied to various applications spaces such as manufacturing, logistics, and healthcare. In this paper, we focus on asset tracking within hospitals and present the tracking system, customer value propositions and service methodologies. A financial analysis showing the benefits from system deployment is also presented.

An Energy Efficient Topology Control Protocol in Wireless Sensor Networks

Seungki Hong; Yeon-Jun Choi; Sun-Joong Kim

Sensor network doesnt have any infrastructure and also is energy constrained network composing hundreds or thousands nodes. These characteristics cause sensor nodes themselves to efficiently organize network topology with the purpose maximizing the lifetime of network. Topology Control is one of the most important techniques in wireless sensor networks to reduce energy consumption and to prevent interference among communicating nodes. This technique is performed by adjusting the transmission power of each sensor node while guaranteeing the original connectivity with other nodes. In this paper, we propose the topology control protocol which doesnt use the location information of nodes and depend on the radio propagation model like prior works by proving actual transmission power between sensor nodes to be feasible in real applications. We also consider the potential problem in topology control scheme which can be occurred in the case where network traffic is converged on particular node due to transmission power control. Finally, we mathematically prove that our proposed topology control protocol increases the lifetime of network while guaranteeing the network connectivity among sensor nodes.

Moderating effect of individual differences on the adoption of u-healthcare service

Junghae Seo; Sun-Jin Kim; Sun-Joong Kim

Since many countries are fast aging, the needs for caring aging population are increasing. As the ubiquitous sensor network (USN) technologies have shown their potential in nursing routine care of aging population or the people who are suffering from chronic diseases, many firms and medical centers want to enter this enormous and unexplored market with u-healthcare service. In order for a new service to be succeeded in the market, it is important to understand the factors affecting peoplepsilas behavioral intention to use. Thus, we empirically investigated which factors have an influence on the adoption of u-healthcare service. The findings indicate that potential userpsilas intention to adopt u-healthcare service is determined by their perception on usefulness and ubiquitous availability. In addition, it was found that the influence of some predictors on intention to use is moderated by personal innovativeness. Meanwhile, contrary to our expectation, it is revealed that perceived ease of use has no influence on the adoption intention.
