A gerotor pump is suitable for oil hydraulics of machine tools, automotive engines, compressors, constructions and other various applications. Especially the pump is an essential machine element of an automotive engine to feed lubricant oil. The subject of this paper is the theoretical analysis of the internal lobe pump which is a particular type of positive displacement pump. The main components of the pump are rotors; usually the outer rotor profile is characterized by lobes with circular shape, while the inner rotor profile is determined as conjugate as the outer rotor profile. For this reason the topic presented here is the definition of the geometry of the rotors starting from the design parameters. The choice of these parameters is subject to some limitations in order to avoid cusp and loop between rotors. And the integrated system which is composed of three main modules has been developed through AutoLISP & Visual Basic and CAD considering various design parameters. It generates automatically an designed model for a general type of a gerotor pump and allows us to calculate two performances indexes commonly used for the study of positive displacement pumps: the flow rate and flow rate irregularity. Results obtained using the system enable the designer and manufacturer of oil pump to be more efficient in this field.

Design of Rotor for Internal Gear Pump Using Cycloid and Circular-Arc Curves

T. H. Choi; M. S. Kim; G. S. Lee; Sung-Yuen Jung; J. H. Bae; C. Kim

In the case of internal gear pumps, the eccentricity of the outer rotor, which resembles a circular lobe, must be limited to a certain value in order to avoid the formation of cusps and loops; furthermore, the tip width of the inner rotor, which has a hypocycloid curve and an epicycloid curve, should not be allowed to exceed the limit value. In this study, we suggest that the tip width of the inner rotor be controlled by inserting a circular-arc curve between the hypocycloid and epicycloid curves. We also suggest that the outer rotor be designed using the closed-form equation for the inner rotor and the width correction coefficient. Thus, it is possible to design a gerotor for which there is no upper limit on the eccentricity, as in this case, undercut is prevented and there is no restriction on the tip width. We also develop an automated program for rotor design and calculation of the flow rate and flow rate irregularity. We demonstrate the superior performance of the gerotor developed in this study by analyzing the internal fluid flow using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-code.

Study on Flow Characteristics and Discharge Coefficient of Safety Valve for LNG/LNG-FPSO Ships

Sung Jin Kim; Sung-Yuen Jung; Dang-Ju Kim; Chul Geun Kim

The safety valve used in LNG/LNG-FPSO ships plays an important role in maintaining a fixed level of pressure by emitting LNG gas out of the pipes in the LNG piping system. The discharge coefficient is regarded as the most important factor in the valve performance. To satisfy the ships classification, the discharge coefficient of the safety valve must usually be over 0.8. Despite the importance of understanding the flow phenomena inside the safety valve, the valve design is usually based on experience and experiments. We carried out a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) investigation using the ANSYS-CFX software. We observed the flow phenomena inside the valve and measured the discharge coefficients according to changes in the valve lift, which is the distance between the exit of the nozzle and the lower part of the disc plate. We verified our CFD results for the discharge coefficients using available experimental data.

Structural Safety Analysis and Reinforcement for Weak Area of the Coal Silo Tunnel using Finite Elements Analysis

Hyun Woo Lee; Sung-Yuen Jung; Se-Arm Song; Minsoo Kim; Jinhyung Kim; Chul Geun Kim

Silo is a warehouse for storing granular materials such as grain, cement, petroleum compound and coal. When compared to other warehouses, the silo can use space efficiently. The coal silo are consists of silo, tunnel and extractor. Of these, there are not sufficient study and design data on tunnel. It depends heavily upon trial and error method by field engineers with several years of experience. Recently, silos are constructed with a large size, and tunnel becomes to be in danger of severe cracking and collapse by a huge load of coal. So it is necessary to analyze structural safety for tunnel. In this study, the problems of the tunnel are analyzed by field data, and reinforcement of structural weak area using FE analysis has been carried out to design the tunnel satisfying structural safety. From FE Analysis, the reinforced model which does not exceed the yield strength of the material has been proposed.
