Prevalence of Von Willebrand Disease in Dogs from São Paulo State, Brazil

The aims of the current study were to assess the prevalence of von Willebrand disease (vWD) in dogs from the region of Botucatu, São Paulo State, Brazil, and to evaluate laboratory tests to diagnose this disease. The study included 350 dogs of various ages, different breeds, and both sexes. Dogs included in the study had no historical or clinical evidence of abnormal bleeding. von Willebrand factor antigen (vWF: Ag), buccal mucosal bleeding time, activated partial thromboplastin time, and factor VIII activity were evaluated in their ability to diagnose vWD. The prevalence of vWD in dogs was 1.43% in the Botucatu region of Brazil. Determination of vWF: Ag was the best laboratory test to diagnose vWD.

Hematologic, serum biochemistry and urinary values for captive Crab-eating Fox (Cerdocyon thous) in São Paulo state, Brazil

The importance of studies with hematological, serum biochemistry and urinary values of Crab-eating Fox (Cerdocyon thous) is based on the need for health care and maintenance of those populations. This paper has the objective to investigate hematological, serum biochemistry and urinary physiological parameters of the Crab-eating fox, comparing gender and age differences. Blood samples were collected in 2003 from 52 animals of different Zoos in Sao Paulo state, Brazil; 7mL of blood was used to obtain a complete blood cell count (CBC) and the profile of the serum biochemistry. Moreover, 5mL of urine were collected for analysis. There was no difference in values for male and female animals, as for the CBC and serum biochemistry. Some hematological and serum biochemical parameters were influenced by age, showing significant differences. Urinalysis results were just demonstrated in a descriptive form. The studied values were, RBC 4.35±0.73 x 106 /µL, WBC 7.72±3.66 x 103 /µL (predominance of segmented neutrophils), platelets 227.06±111.58 x 103 /µL, urea 43.06±14.28mg/dL and creatinine 1.03±0.24mg/dL. Hematological, serum biochemistry and urinary values obtained in this study can be used as physiological values of the captive Crab-eating Fox. It is possible to conclude that wild species need their own reference values, differentiating animals in captivity from free-ranging animals.

Efeitos anestésicos da administração intranasal ou intramuscular de cetamina S+ e midazolam em pomba-rola (Streptotelia sp.)

The intranasal route is a good alternative because is painless and easy to perform in birds. The objective of this study was to evaluate the anesthetic effects of S+ ketamine and midazolam administered by intranasal or intramuscular route in pigeons. Twelve animals were used in a randomized and crossover design. Animals received two treatments with 2-weeks interval. IM group: animals received 20mg/kg of S+ ketamine and 3.5mg/kg of midazolam by intramuscular route (pectoral muscles); IN group: animals received the same protocol by intranasal route. Parameters evaluated were: onset of action, time of duration in dorsal recumbency; total time of anesthesia and side effects. Statistical analysis was performed using Wilcoxon test and the differences were considered significant when P<0.05. Onset of action was 30 [30-47.5] and 40 [30-50] seconds for IM and IN respectively. Time of duration in dorsal recumbency was 59 [53.25-65] and 63 [37-71.25] minutes for IM and IN respectively, without significant differences between treatments. Total time of anesthesia was 88 [86.25-94.5] and 68 [53.5-93] minutes for IM and IN, respectively, with significant difference between groups. The recovery time was lower for IN (15[4.25-19.5] minutes) compared with IM (32 [28.25-38.25] minutes). Two animals of each group presented regurgitation in the recovery period. It was concluded that S+ ketamine and midazolam administered intranasal is an acceptable method of drug delivery and can be used to promote anesthesia in pigeons.

Ruptura de ducto torácico idiopático em um gato: Relato de caso

The idiopathic thoracic duct rupture is rare accurrence in veterinary medicine. This report describes the female feline admission, 5 years old, in the emergency room and intensive care of the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Minas Gerais studying with dyspnea, chest muffled sounds, and large volume of chylous aspect of liquid after thoracic puncture. The rapid collection of pleural fluid after puncture, along with the laboratory aspect of effusion, suspected to break the idiopathic thoracic duct, considering that the patient had no history of trauma, nor access to the street. After thoracotomy, there was a complete rupture of the thoracic duct, the height of the ninth thoracic vertebra, on which a ligature was performed. The patient developed satisfactorily, being discharged ten days after the surgical procedure. We conclude that the rupture of the thoracic duct has a major change in the patients physiology, requiring preparation of the veterinarian because it is an emergency situation by major systemic changes that cause.

Respostas cardiorrespiratória e metabólica do propofol nas formulações em emulsão lipídica ou microemulsão em gatas

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the cardiorespiratory and metabolic effects from lipid emulsion and microemulsion of propofol in cats. Twelve healthy adult cats were included, and divided into two groups: microemulsion group (MICRO, n=6) and lipid emulsion (EMU, n=6), where they received propofol in the respective formulation, in a dose sufficient for intubation. The animals were then intubated and provided with 100% oxygen through a non-rebreathing circuit. Immediately after, the infusion of propofol was initiated (0.3mg kg-1 min-1) and maintained for 90 minutes. The dose required for induction was 9.5±1.3mg kg-1 and 10±1mg kg-1 in MICRO and EMU, respectively. The SAP, MAP, DAP and pH values were lower in all moments in EMU when compared to MICRO; the RR in EMU was lower from T30 to T75 in comparison to MICRO. The paCO2 was greater in the EMU from T15 to T90. The times to extubation, sternal recumbency, ambulation and total recovery were 40.6±30.7, 91±37.5, 134.5±54.5 and 169.1±55.4 minutes in MICRO and 68.8±37.3, 133.3±85.3, 171.3±77.1 and 233.1±60.6 minutes in EMU, respectively. There was an increase of the enzyme alanine aminotransferase from 12 to 72 hours in EMU and in MICRO from 48 to 72 hours. The propofol in microemulsion presents clinical characteristics of induction and maintenance, and metabolic effects similar to the formulation in lipid emulsion. The microemulsion formulation provides a better cardiovascular and respiratory stability for induction and continuous infusion in healthy cats.

Avaliação dos parâmetros cardiorrespiratórios, hemogasométricos e da concentração plasmática de cortisol em bovinos submetidos à imobilização eletromagnética

The ways of immobilization generally used in cattle provide excessive manipulation and stress for the animal. The pain is an emotional experience and unpleasant sensation in combination with tissue damage. The new method of physical restraint for cattle uses low intensity electromagnetic waves, promising immobilization without stress or painful stimulation for the animals. The aim of this study is to evaluate of cardiorespiratory effects and plasmatic cortisol concentration of cattle submitted to electromagnetic immobilization. Six healthy cows with average weight of 300.3 ± 85.76 kg (mean ± SD) were assigned to two treatments in a randomized design with a 15-day interval between experiments GC (control group) and GI (immobilization group). Data are presented as mean + SD. The statistical analyses used the t-Test between groups, and ANOVA random block design between times into same group. All statistical analyses were performed using P<0.05 as a significant level. Evaluation moments: M1 (basal); M1: after withdrawal probe, M2 and M3 (30 and 60 minutes after M1 respectively). There was a significant increase of FC and f in M1, PAM in the moments (M1, M2, M3) and in the levels of plasmatic cortisol concentration in M1 e M2 in the immobilization group when to compared with the control group. It could be concluded that this electromagnetic immobilization is a method of physic restraint only, offers no anesthetic support and favors comfort and animal welfare.
