We experimentally demonstrate the use of AMOOFDM format for remote modulation of low-bandwidth RSOA as a cost effective solution for 10 Gbit/s upstream transmission in 20 km single fiber WDM-PON architecture.

We experimentally investigate the transmission performance of a novel modulation based on a recently proposed technique of adaptively modulated optical orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (AMOOFDM) for next-generation passive optical network (NG-PON). This signal was generated by direct modulation of cost-effective and low-bandwidth commercially available distributed-feedback and vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers. Using the Levin-Campello adaptive bit-loading algorithm for channel capacity optimization over AMOOFDM modulation to reach maximum transmission performance, we experimentally demonstrated that high bit rate can be transmitted in optical access network without the need for chromatic dispersion compensation and optical amplification on the link.

This paper describes broadband optical access networks evolutions including high speed home interfaces for fixed and mobile services. Technical challenges are also discussed, namely concerning optical extended budget, 10 Gbit/s interfaces as well as the impact of access evolutions on the metropolitan network.

We experimentally demonstrate 10 Gbit/s transmission over 2.5 GHz bandwidth by direct modulation of commercial VCSEL and FP lasers using AMOOFDM modulation. A comparison between the two transmitters is performed.
