The signet-ring cells seen in gastric carcinoma of the diffuse type were studied by light and electron microscopy. A classification of these cells into Types A, B and C was developed, based on intracellular mucous granules, nuclei and organelles, and by reactions to PAS and Alcian-blue staining. The gradual transition of Type A cells to Type B and the subsequent change of Type B to Type C suggest successive stages in maturation. These cells, especially those of Type B, resemble the mucous neck cells of the corpus and the glands of the pylorus.

One hundred and fourty‐three cases of scirrhous cancer originating in the body of the stomach were examined histologically. The number corresponded to 4.2% of gastric cancer, 28.0% of scirrhous gastric cancers and 19.2% gastric cancers originating in the body of the stomach. From 30 to 60 years of age, there were twice as many female as male patients in every age decade.

Circumscribed, sessile and flatly elevated early carcinomas were found in 5.5% out of 648 cases of early gastric carcinoma and their histological features were described. Most of the lesions showed highly differentiated tubular adenocarcinomas composed of columnar epithelia and were accompanied by severe intestinal metaplasia in the cancer‐bearing pyloric mucosae.

Two cases of double choledochus with ectopic drainage into the stomach associated with gastric carcinoma were reported. The stomachs were resected because of the presence of cancer, and the orifices of the ectopic bile duct were found in the oral side of the lesions. In these two cases, hyperplasia of gastric foveolas and atrophy of fundic gland, with its cystic dilatation, were observed around the orifices. A possible correlation between direct flow of bile juice into the stomach through the ectopic bile duct and the development of gastric cancer was discussed. The literature regarding double choledochus was reviewed.

Silicosis is a granulomatous disease of the lung, caused by inhalation of silica-containing dusts and have characteristic silicotic nodules in its morphological basis. It is supposed, however, that cases of silicosis not forming these isolated nodules may be present owing to the physical and chemical conditions of the dusts, volume and size of the inhalated particles and functional conditions of the patients like in cases of pulmonary tuberculosis. A case presented here showed rather different clinical and histological features from those of cases previously reported. Clinical co~rse: A 34-year-old male. No remarkable disease was found in his familial history. At the age of 20, he had suffered from r-pleuritis sicca. From June, 1953, he was engaged in indoor-work crashing silica at some factory near Okazaki-City of Aichi-Prefecture. After one and a half years he changed his position in the same factory from some unknown reason. From May, 1956 he complained of symptoms doutful of pulmonary tuberculosis ; general weariness, slight-fever, night-sweat, cough, etc. By X-ray examination, which was performed one month later at the Internal Medical Department of Nagoya City University, generally distributed fine miliary shadows were detected in both lungs. From the following month, under the diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis, anti-tuberculous therapy using PAS, INAH, SM. was began at the same department. But clinical symptoms both subjective and objective, showed little recovery and the miliary shadows found in the X-ray examinations tended to confuse with each other gradually. Although anti-tuberculous therapy was continued to the second course from Jan. 1957, dyspnea and irregular fever were superimposed upon the symtoms from about that time. The patient expired on the 20th. of May, 1957. Detection test of tubercle becilli in his sputa were negative throughout the entire course of the disease. Both sides of the lungs showed remarkable increase in size (r. 22 .5~15 .0~7 .0 cm., 1. 20.5x15.5x7.5 cm.) and weight (r. 1160 gm., 1. 960 gm.) and hardness.
