Cultural Practices as Contexts for Development

Jacqueline J. Goodnow; Peggy J. Miller; Frank Kessel; Terri Gullickson; Pamela Ramser

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1996, Vol 41(4), 396. Contributors to Cultural Practices as Contexts for Development (see record 1995-97387-000) examine an approach to the study of development-in-context that is grounded in the notion of cultural practices. These practices are defined as actions that occur routinely in everyday life and are shared widely by the group. The several writers contributing chapters here illustrate the conceptual and methodological practices of this approach as they are demonstrated in specific studies. Opening with a general introduction to the concept of cultural practices, the bulk of the text documents the following research: moral principles implicit in the practice of where family members sleep each night; development through participation in a sociocultural activity; identity formation among Indian Hindu adolescents in the United States; cultural practices and the concept of individual differences; and the history and current usage of such terms as “practice,” “activity,” “situation,” and “context.” (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)

Terri Gullickson; Pamela Ramser

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1996, Vol 41(4), 393. The Dictionary of Psychological Testing, Assessment, and Treatment (see record 1995-98286-000) provides over 5,000 definitions of key terms from major psychometric and other psychological tests, experimental methods and analyses; statistical procedures commonly used in psychology; categories of mental illness; basic neuroanatomy; commonly used medical terms; and various forms of psychological therapies. Basic terms are defined assuming little background knowledge, and more complex terms contain lengthier definitions assuming some prior knowledge. All of the definitions are cross-referenced so that readers can retrace their steps to more simplified or complex definitions. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)

Biology of Anxiety Disorders

Rudolf Hoehn-Saric; Daniel R. McLeod; Terri Gullickson; Pamela Ramser

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1996, Vol 41(1), 85. This is a volume (see record 1993-97167-000) in the Progress in Psychiatry series, published by the American Psychiatric Association Scientific Program Committee in collaboration with the American Psychiatric Press. Composed of symposium papers by a renowned group of experts, it provides recent data on the neurobiology and pathophysiology of anxiety from a variety of perspectives. The contributors discuss recent advances in neuroimaging that have enhanced the study of anxiety, examine how findings regarding the biology of serotonin receptors relate to a variety of anxiety disorders, and review several kindling models that can be used to understand mechanisms that affect responsivity to panic-inducing stimuli. Also examined are peripheral physiological manifestations of anxiety, including recent findings on the physiological expression of anxiety disorders, and the relationship between these objective bodily changes and the subjective perception of these changes. Obsessive-compulsive disorder spectrum : pathogenesis, diagnosis, and treatment

Jose A. Yaryura-Tobias; Fugen Neziroglu; Terri Gullickson

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1997, Vol 42(8), 758. Reviews Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Spectrum: Pathogenesis, Diagnosis, and Treatment (see record 1997-97157-000). Organized in three parts, this book examines the primary features of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), neuropsychiatric disorders associated with OCD, and research issues in the field. The book is based on clinical experience with more than 2,000 patients and exhaustive literature reviews by the authors who argue that OCD is not a single clinical entity but part of a continuum of related disorders previously considered to be separate. Chapter topics include history, culture, and clinical aspects of OCD; biological and behavior therapies; OCD in childhood; assessment tools; and OCD associated with the following disorders: schizophrenia, major depression, manic depression, alcohol, substance abuse, somatic conditions (e.g., hypochondria, hysteria), body dysmorphic disorder, eating disorders, self-mutilation, and neurological disorders (e.g., epilepsy, Tourettes syndrome). The final chapter examines research and clinical material concerning comorbidity, neurobiological development, OCD correlates, biochemical aspects, human research, and a unified theory of OCD. Hispanic Substance Abuse

Raymond Sanchez Mayers; Barbara L. Kail; Thomas D. Watts; Terri Gullickson; Pamela Ramser

Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1996, Vol 41(1), 83–84. Contributors to this volume (see record 1993-98467-000) tackle the serious problem of substance abuse in the Hispanic population, the fastest growing minority group in the United States. Divided into two sections, the book examines epidemiology and etiology and prevention and treatment. Emphasis is placed on the need for counselors to be culturally sensitive to provide effective treatment, and to understand, among other factors, the Hispanic value of family and cooperation; the notion of “personalismo,” “simpatia,” and “respeto”; and the need for a directive, action-oriented approach to therapy. Among other issues influencing substance abuse, the contributors discuss the themes of stress and family discord, peer groups, the lack of English-speaking ability, poor job skills, impoverished neighborhoods, and value clashes with an Anglo-American society. In addition, contributors describe differences among various sub-groups of Hispanics and investigate such influences as acculturation, gender socialization, and natural and social support systems.
